I've been reading online and it seems easy. Has anyone here ever done it? Is it as easy as it looks?

It is very easy, if you have a compressor. Cut off the old grips and remove the tape. Clean and apply new tape, cover with a little soapy water, start the new grip on, then apply small burst of air from the compressor to the hole at the end of the grip as you slide the grip on to the shaft. Simple as that.

Yes... Very easy to do, especially if you use the air compressor method mentioned above. If you use Pure grips this method becomes even easier (and cheaper) as you don't need any tape outer solvent. On a side note... The search feature is an amazing thing.

Soap and water is not such a good idea. The grips are easy to put on with that method but can be hard to remove (it turns into glue) with a compressor. For steel shafts the grip can be cut away easily, but I don't like taking a Stanley knife to a graphite shaft.

I just use turps. Poor it over the tape and poor it into the grip and then shake it out. A piece of cake to slide the grip on without a compressor and easy off with a compressor.

Just make sure you line up any grip arrows with the club face correctly and make sure the tape reaches about a 1/2" beyond the end of the shaft. Pinch in the excess tape before doing the Turps. thing. That extra tape makes sure no water enters the shaft through the grip hole.

One tip...if you plan on doing this invest in some sort of vise to hold your clubs. I bought a mini-vise off Ebay with a clamp bottom (ie portable). I clamped it onto the side of a cabinet in my garage next to my workbench at just the right height and Presto, instant gripping station.

also, if you wanna keep that solvent to use more than once, twice, etc: stop by your local walmart/target/whatever and pick up a plastic shoe box bin....(i paid $1.67)...put it under the end of the shaft you're gripping...then just pour it back in the container when you're done. presto (as TS so put lol)

Its super easy with a compressor!  No double sided tape, no solvents, no mess.  Cut the old ones off and remove the old sticky tape.  You can either blow them right on the bare shaft, or use either blue painters tape or regular masking tape to build up the shaft if you want to.  I've done it with a bunch of different grips with no issues.  Plus they can be played right away without having to wait for anything to dry.

Once you have done the first set this way, replacing 13 grips is literally a matter of minutes.

I started blowing off grips with a compressor last year and it was a great introduction for me.  I was also blowing them on with little or no tape and no solvent.  But then I noticed some grips were slipping.  So now I use compressor only to blow off.  I have found sovent and tape to be reliable and found it does not take much time over the conmpressor method and for newer clubs, I find I can leave the existing tape on the shafts and double up if need be and then solvent and push on - no biggie.  In this way I actually save time since I don't need to strip old tape, which for me was the biggest PITA of all.

I have made a small investment in a shaft vice and a station thingy from golfworks which holds the grip and captures solvent.  Total investment is around $90 I think and my life is now easy.

To a point made above, the ability to do your own grips is:

1) fun for the DIY type of guy like me

2) good for your game since you can ensure good grips and experiment to find good combinations (I like Sharpro Tour Velvet Wraps)

3) Save money if you regrip enough even if you invest in some tools.

    • I generally like par-3 courses and find it a darn shame that the last of them closed in my area during the pandemic. Part of it may have to do with the fact that I never have been very good with the longer clubs, so the short holes are a bit more my speed.  Being able to get in 18 holes in two hours was pretty convenient and, ironically, the lack of crowds made them peaceful places to be. Naturally, that's the same reason they no longer exist around here.  The second option sounds like a whole lot of no fun.
