Well I had a lesson today and when I told my instructor I did not feel like I was hitting it far enough some of the times he told me it was probably because of where the ball was hitting the face of the club.  He also told me that it could be my clubs, he did not know about the brand I have specifically but he said a lot of times with clones the metal is reused or something and they are not as consistent.

I think I spent about $100 on my irons so it was not a huge investment and I would not mind just using them as a backup set for friends.

I have limited funds so I would probably look for something used if I decide to get new clubs, do you guys think this would be a wise decision? I can't make up my mind.  I'd rather get a nice wedge or two but if its going to help my game I'd consider upgrading my irons.   If so any recommendations on good clubs I might be able to get a good deal on?

Here is what I would do:

-Don't worry about hitting it FAR --- just worry about hitting it a relatively consistent distance. (Then worry about aim.)

-Save the $$ for lessons (for now).

-When you do decide to upgrade, buy some older irons, used, and at a steep discount.

(I just picked up a set of Hogan Apex Plus irons  for $85 from the used section of a store in town. Craigslist, ebay, ...older-but-good irons are there to be had for cheap.)

I wouldn't worry about it. Pinemeadow is sorta high endish as far as clones go, they use cheaper steel, which will net less distance and shrink your sweet spot a little but will not cause inconsistent distance on well struck balls.

My guess is your hitting it fat, thats a common problem for many people who are just starting or don't get out much. Practice and playing will fix a good amount of that over time. I got new clubs and my scores started improving... but after recently playing a round on the old clubs I realized that was more a product of me playing more then I ever had before with the new clubs. Haveing new clubs motivated me to play more and I improved but the actual clubs added distance but didn't change my score a whole lot.

If you have the money and want new clubs go for it but if you want lower scores practice practice practice.

Thanks guys, they feel fine to me but I have never used a nicer set so I really have nothing to compare to.  Ill just go demo some clubs at golf galaxy and keep my eye out for a good deal if I decide its worth upgrading.  I honestly don't know how i'd be able to tell if my clubs were not hitting it consistent distances though.

I would find out what your lie is. You may be 0 degrees in which case any standard club will be ok. You may find that your lie is quite different in which case saving up your money now or in the future and getting fitted for clubs makes sense. Also if you buy used clubs they may have been fitted for someone else which is a crapshoot. I am 4 up I recently found out. I have a set of clubs on order which should be here in a few days. I have been playing with standard clubs my whole life. I am guessing it will help. It certainly can't hurt. Good luck!

Yeah that's another thing I'd like to do but it is probably hard to get the correct lie in used clubs.  How did you figure out what yours was suppose to be?

a few things you should know.  Lie angle is not the same from one manufacturer to the next, there is no industry standard (but they are pretty close) So dont get fit for one set of irons and then assume that you will be the same in the next set.  Also be aware that most clubs can be bent to fit your lie angle so buing a used set can still be fit to you.  Last thing to consider is that if your gonna be taking more lessons your swing is gonna change, so having the lie angle changed at this point would be a bit of a waste of time and money.

I've been hitting some irons that I haven't been happy with for a while, so I went out and got some new clubs that were used. I got the on a good deal and I have loved them. Check out the used clubs at a few golf stores...chances are you will find something that works better than your current one for relatively cheap.

I use Callaway X-20s and I really like them.  They are forgiving, but can also be grown into for control.  You can get a used set right around $200.  Also, you can get fitted to used clubs - Dick's will do it, for example, for about $5.99 per club.  They can be bent to give a "fitting" after the purchase.

If you do decide to get new ones, i'd recommend eBay. You can get great deals on there for iron sets 3+ years old that are in good condition. I may buy a set of burner 2.0s for 550 on there soon. You can't beat it.

I bought a used set of Ping Eye 2+ that fit me (according to their online fit...I am right in between a blue and green dot).  They were a great deal and are such an easy club to fit.  I regripped the set and I am thrilled with them.  They may be 20 years old....but they still hit very well.

Played X20s for two years, and they are a decent club. A little klunky out of the rough, but other than that a good club. Another benefit: X20s have a dull nickel finish on the heads, and don't show bag wear nearly as much as X22.

Note: Stock X20s come with Uniflex shaft (between regular and stiff), and not everyone likes Uniflex. As with all clubs, try before you buy.

And, stay away from eBay. Test hit the clubs before you buy them, make sure they fit you.

I just worry about fake clubs on ebay or else I would.

I think I am just going to stick with these, I really think its a problem with me not hitting the sweet spot enough and hitting to far behind the ball occasionally. I went to the d range today and the distances seemed pretty consistent when I felt like I hit it good.

I found some Taylor made R7 irons 5-pw for $200 on craigslist.  Have any of you guys used these before and do you think thats a good buy? How much do you think it would cost to get them fitted to me if I did that?

$200 isn't too bad for the R7's . It is inline with valueguide.pga.com.  I have a set of Ping G5's 5-PW for $220 shipped if you want, just PM me if interested.

I just got the Callaway X24 hot irons from ebay for $400.............half what they are retailing for....when they arrived, I submitted the serial number on the callway registration site and they were legit.

Terrific feel.

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
