Hey guys, I'm new to the forums here and I'm looking for some advice on club selection.  I've been playing for a few years now and I'm ready to get out of my starter set.  I'm using a set of Founder's Club irons I was given as a gift from my parents.

I am looking for a set that's strictly irons.  I have a 3 and 4 hybrid right now, and I hit them fine, but I'd prefer a regular 3 and 4 iron to hybrids.  I have no trouble getting my clubs in the air, and my distances is fine, so it's not unusual for me to hit the hybrids as high as a PW should be.  I feel like I would be a little more confident with an iron in my hand than a hybrid as well.

All that being said, I have tried out Taylormade Burner 1.0's, Burner Pluses, and Callaway X-20 NG's.  The Burner Pluses were a definite no-go for me.  The huge sole on the lower clubs did not exactly inspire confidence when looking at them, and I didn't feel like I ever hit them solid.  The Burner 1.0's were more pleasing to look at at address and I felt like I hit them alright.  Those were originally the two sets I was trying to decide between after researching GIC online.  I decided to give the X-20's a try though and I have to say, I really liked how they felt.  They're good looking and easy to hit for me.

The X-20's will be the club to beat for me as I look at more sets, but I'm wanting recommendations on what else I should try.  I'm not looking to be able to shape my shots or anything, I'm definitely not there yet.  I'm looking for something to give me a little forgiveness when I hit off the toe or the heel, but not something that's going to alter the trajectory of my shots.  Any suggestions are welcome guys, and thanks in advance.

I am trying to figure out how you are seeing the sole of the club at address! Ping G5, G10, G15 and Cleveland CG7 for Pings and Clevelands.

Those X20 are nice clubs too, definately won't go wrong with those.  Check out the Wilson Staff Di9, Di11.

Hah, I'm not seeing it at address!  My setup isn't THAT bad, :).  I'm just not a fan of the looks of them.  They also seem a little heaver to me and they just don't quite feel right in my hands.

I'll try out the Pings, Clevelands and Wilsons.  I was also looking at the Mizuno MX-200 & 300's, would you suggest them?

Once you get on a golf forum you gain the magical ability to see the sole and the back of the cavity at address.  I agree that the size and shape of the topline certainly affects one's visual appreciation of a club, and has a small impact on alignment/confidence.  But the obsession with it is weird.  I can hit 1980's Wilson Staff blades one day and 2009 MX-200s the next day with the same exact swing, and I'm far from the best ballstriker around.  That being said, I think the OP should look at some Wilson Staff Ci9s.  Seem to have all the qualities he wants, and available for a great price.

I agree, the obsession is weird.  I don't even notice the topline of the club at address.  I am focusing on the ball, not the iron.

If I had the cash I would have purchased the Di11's. Hit them long and straight.

Just my thought...

Taylormade M4 10.5* (turned down to 8.5*)
Ping G410 LST 3 Wood
Ping G410 5 wood
Titleist F2 7 woods
Ping G graphite irons 5 - PW  Black Dot
Ping Gorged Glide Wedges - 50, 54, 58
Directed Force Reno 2.0 Putter
What an amazing game this is.

    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
    • Day 23: Rained all day, so no ball hitting. Worked indoors on top of the backswing feel, and also putted around the living room working on bead.
    • Played Four Oaks in Dracut today going back to the 2 man scramble match play format. My brother and I shot a team 81 winning 3 and 2. Had so many good shots today using a more centered turn. Seems to have really iginited my golf game. We'll see if I can keep it going.
