In 2002.  Oh the scandal!  And it was not just him but "a lot of guys".

And caddie/comedian Michael Collins has come forward with the revelation that he is not surprised and that he has first hand knowledge of the same thing occuring during PGA Tour Events.  Not now of course and nobody he's willing to mention.

Let me be the first to call (mostly) bs.  I'm not saying that nobody ever did this but I really doubt it is as common as (especially Collins) was saying.  He said something to the effect of : I would go into the bathroom and smell the weed and think "man - somebody's relaxed out there".

As somebody who knows a little something about weed I really doubt this highly.

1.  Weed is a performance de-enhancing drug, not the other way around.

2.  Marijuana has an unpredictable effect.  It might relax a person under normal circumstances but it has the capabiity to make somebody more nervous as well.  Unless I was pretty sure I was going home on Friday, I wouldnt smoke weed during play . .and I smoke enough weed to make Bob Marley look like a light weight, lol.

3.  The terminology is off.  I have known hundreds of weed smokers and none of them would ever say "you can go in the porta potty and take your drags".

4.  Garrigus went to rehab so was obviously doing a lot more than weed.  I doubt he remembers what he was doing or not doing in 2002.

As I was listening to the Frank Nobilo go off about integrity of the tour, yada-yada I couldn't help wonder if they maybe aren't to stir up some controversy in the hopes that there could be at least 1 interesting story to come out of the 2011 season.

But weed smoking by cut-missers a dozen years ago . . . wow.  heavy.  If the PGA doesn't respond to this outrage immediately  . . . .snxxxxxxxxxxx (that is me falling asleep mid-sentence).

Who needs drug testing? Just put out bowls of sour cream and onion chips with some dip, beef jerky, peanut butter, Haagen-Dazs ice cream, popcorn, graham crackers for s'mores, celery, grape jelly, Cap'n Crunch, pizzas, water, and FUNYUNS.

Then see who partakes of a disproportionate share. Drug test 'em. Problem solved! :-)

I know guys on high school teams occasionally like to smoke before a practice but not really during big tournaments or a big match for that matter.Thats when its time to really focus. Seems kinda childish for nationwide tour guys to be smoking weed during the round or before it. I couldnt imagine someone doing that and being very successful on the regular pga tour. Its just not something good to do during a highly competitive sport like baseball, basketball, hockey etc let alone golf.

It's a good thing Lumpy Herron isn't playing much anymore. :-P He'd get done with that spread and they'd think he was smoking all the way up the fairways.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
