Hey guys, I am I am not over using this forum. But there is just a wealth of great information on here. I am going to sign up for the online Evolution or whatever it's called online lessons that Isacs advertises in his signature. Well, I recognize that I spin out on every shot, well after seeing the below video I have a much better sensation on pushing the hips down the target line as opposed to just turning them. I already produce tremendous lag, but now by sliding my hips towards the target line, I feel that my lag has increased even more and I can actually feel the club dropping in...

Is this a part of stack and tilt? I hate to start doing this and find success only to sign up for online lessons and discover it is all wrong...

I currently do exactly what he describes at 1:00...

The hip slide? It's a part of every good golf swing. Faders will push their hips forward less than drawers, generally speaking, but every good golfer gets their weight forward by pushing their hips forward.

So, yes, it's a part of S&T.; And, again, every good golf swing.

Oh, you can find lots of videos of people saying you should only "turn" or "clear" your hips, and some will profess to even a small "bump" forward, but if you watch their swings and know what to look for, they all slide their hips farther forward than they advise.

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/thread/29616/the-biggest-secret-slide-your-hips

There's also a video I did wearing bright green where I show a "preset forward/stop" drill.

P.S. Nick Starchuck resists being put into a "camp" or a "group" but he's essentially an S&T; instructor.

Well, I shot a 78 today with no birdies and (2) double bogeys due to slicing my driver OB! I see a lot of drills on YouTube about hip slide, but as a magician around the greens I tend to learn best when someone explains how the hip slide should feel. So for those that care here is how I can best explain it: When I hit my best shots I had the feeling of my body literally making a backwards C (if looking at my swing from behind) at the beginning of the downswing. My first move at the top is a push from my left foot to push my hips 5-6 inches towards my target. Here is where feeling comes in. With my head remaining in place and my hips now 5-6 inches ahead, I literally feel as if I am going to fall backwards! It is not until I start my downswing that I feel my body being rescued from falling to the ground. It literally feels as if I'm picking myself up... Just curious how others start the hip slide??? Thanks

Feel will vary from person to person.

Also, note that you don't want your head to actually move backwards. Oftentimes someone doing this on their own will make their head move backwards, and relative to their head, their hips WILL go forward... because their head has gone backwards. They may not have actually slid their hips forward much at all.

One of the best ways? My video (there's a reason I filmed it). Simply pre-set the hips forward with the head remaining centered. Leave them there, or even push them a little more forward during the downswing.

Make a few swings like this, then slowly back off how much you pre-set forward, but still try to "get to" the same place.

You'll quickly learn what your own feels are. For some it's pushing off the right leg. For some it's straightening the right knee (even though it's less bent at top of backswing). For some it's making the right hip go forward. Or the left hip. Or their left buttcheek. Or sliding their buckle in front of the ball. Or the seam of their shirt. Or putting more and more and more weight on their left foot. Or banking their right foot.

Iacas, Where is this video you are talking about? Can you please tell me the title so I can search for it on Youtube. You are 100 percent correct on this hip slide. Where I got into trouble on my (2) OB drives was when I pushed/slide my hips and my head followed at the same time, I'm a lefty and it resulted in (2) big slices. So I'm assuming that getting my head in front of the ball resulted in the slice. But I can't talk enough about the shots where I slide forward 5-6 inches and kept my head behind the ball. I'm not exaggerating when I say I was consistently hitting my 3 iron 230-240 on short par 4's... I mean it is really amazing how that hip slide puts everything into motion, and now when my arms fire through they are fully extended as opposed to the bend I had in both elbows at contact... Please show me where to find your video as I am very interested in learning to pre-set the hips. I truly believe the only reason I was not under par is because it was really hard for me to find a comfortable way to start the hips forward without it feeling really weird.

It's about 4 inches above your last post.

Harmonious, if it is a YouTube video can you please tell me the name of it so I can search it on my YouTube app. I'm using the Taptotalk iPhone app and it is not showing me the link. When I go 4 inches above my last post I'm looking at my wife's hinny as she lays out!!! :-) Thanks

Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uleZH2nRy9U It's titled "Hit and Stop/Weight Forward Drill", and it's on iacas' YouTube page as well. I don't know what you can and can't access on the iPhone app, but I hope that helps.

Thanks Jamo, I'm working on the drills now from the link that you pasted... I'm really excited about this, who knew the hip slide towards the target 5-6 inches was so important...

Ok,

I am having a hard time getting the sensation of the hips sliding forward (towards target) 5-6 inches during the downswing, until now. And I hope this may help some others visualize. My problem was that I was so focused on staying centered over the ball that at the top of my backswing I really had no weight on my left leg so it was making it hard to have anything to push off of in order to get my hips started to the target 5-6 inches. And I'm not even sure if "weight" is the right word or if I should say "shifting properly during backswing". But now, with a proper turn I feel weight/pressure on my inside left leg which allows my to push/straighten leg and send my hips down target line while my head stays behind the ball. (I'm a lefty, just in case this sounds backwards to everyone)...

Hope this makes sense, it works for me  guess.

Hey Cupped-this hasn't led to any issues of you feeling like you are leaving weight on your back leg has it? This is the move I have also struggled with and any help is much appreciated!

Sorry guys, I must have deleted my last thread when I was editing it.  Here is a video of my lower body during the back swing. It is really rough and untimed right now but I am confident it is exactly the correct move, and I know it will take some getting use to but I can feel the added power and the club dropping in. In relation to the outlet you can see the hips push forward but unfortunately it feels like an unfolding lawn chair...

No, I merged it with your other threads about the hip slide. Just like this thread... Please stop making new threads for what amounts to the same topic.

Also, that's not a video of your lower body during your back swing. You're not hitting a ball or holding a club. It may be similar, but I doubt it will look like that.

How does this look? The ball striking feels much better and I can feel the increase in clubhead speed... I'm sure it is far from perfect, but I'm just wandering if this is a good starting point?

I'm guessing that you want your backswing to look like Phill's in the video below.

If so, look at your video at around 16 seconds. You might want to work on preventing your hip from moving so far forward. I can see the same in your "Leg Work Golf Swing" in post #14.

Also, from when you're at the top in the "Leg Work Golf Swing" video, your upper body moves forward with your forward hip slide. I'd recommend trying to keep the head back when you slide your hips forward from the top.

Thanks for the feedback, I've just started working on this and it is a completely different feeling. I can tell because I feel a stretch in my left hamstring right behind my knee when I straighten my left leg to push my hips forward. I will say that my best contact comes when my hips push forward and I almost feel as if I go into a reverse C at contact, look at Mickelson at :04 seconds.

What is the main reason for bending the led arm at the top of the backswing? Am I over swinging, taking it back too far, etc....?

If you are trying to get your swing to look like Phil's....Phil looks like he's getting his weight onto his left side (inside of his left foot) in the backswing - like a pitcher about to push off a rubber on the mound, and then right side through the swing. In your video, you look like you are getting most of your weight on your right side at the top of the backswing - which doesn't give you anything to push off.

Also, IMHO, Phil's swing is not a good one for us amateurs to copy. It's so athletic and freewheeling that I think most mortals cannot possibly make consistent impact with this type of swing.

cuppedtin at top.bmp Looks like you're swinging 100° back. Your lead forearm looks cocked too much. Phil's forearm is cocked as well, but to a lesser degree.

I think he cocks his lead elbow at the top because of a lack of flexibility. I'd suggest trying to straighten your lead arm in order to improve ball striking consistency.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
