If Tigers injury keeps him from playing in the foreseeable future does anyone know how long it would take him to free fall out of the WGC top 50?  Something the PGA and it's sponsors must view with increasing alarm.

Taking a glance at his current points, the current #50 points and the dispersion of his points across the 2 years, I estimate around November. That's if he doesn't earn any more points between now and then

Well, we don't have to worry about that.

He could be out of the top 50 before he plays again. It would be shocking to see Tiger not being qualified for certain events.

WGC = World Golf Championships OWGR = Official World Golf Ranking He's out for the remainder of the FedEx cup, so he will drop some more. Many others won't play the last three or four tournaments either, though.

So we can bank on November then?

I'm pretty sure winning a major in 2008 and being a lifetime member of the PGA Tour helps with that.

I'm pretty sure winning a major in 2008 and being a lifetime member of the PGA Tour does not help him get into certain WGCs. Also wouldn't be able to play in his own event if he wants that event to have ranking points.

Edit: Although I'm pretty sure my last point is incorrect.

There's a reason I said "helps" and not "guarantees" or some other word.

Which is why I said "certain" events

I wonder if Fred Couples will still pick him for the Presidents Cup team. He said pretty clearly that he will pick Tiger if he is healthy and up to it.
If he wants to come talk to me and say maybe I am not as healthy as I thought I was, so be it, but as far as our concern if he is not the top 10 — he will be on our team, no doubt. He is the best player in the world for a long time. He has slipped a little in rankings maybe, the way he is shooting scores, but he is still Tiger, and if I am captain, I will pretty much take him anytime we go.
Tiger will be playing the Notah Begay tournament in the end of August before that time. I think they usually pick in the beginning of September, so his performance at the Australian Open wont change things. Not picking Tiger have always sounded strange, but it would be fair to give someone else the chance. Judging by the Presidents Cup standings, it would not be weird to choose Tiger, but his performance the last two events has not been good. 92 days to go of course, he will probably improve by that time.

I think it's a matter of this: "Tiger, Freddie here. You want to play?"

I'm a little peeved at Fred right now..

I have always been a fan of Boom Boom, but if he picks Tiger as a captain's pick.. GRRRRRR..  Tiger has no right to jeopardize the team by accepting a Capt's pick.. Freddie shouldn't even be giving Tiger the option..  I will LOSE all respect to this match if Freddie only picks Tiger because of possible TV ratings..  There are a handful of golfers right now that are easily out performing Tiger, and should be given first consideration..  If fact if I was a guarantee spot, I would demand that those more deserving get their opportunity to shine..  Tiger is currently 24th in points.. There are a handful of players as well that are nipping at his heels, and are OUT performing Tiger coming in the homestretch.. Players like JB Holmes, Dufner, DA Points, Kim, Woodland, Verplank..

Its not clear to me what the rules on the Chevron (and the Nedbank) are. If you do a search, you can find some stories from a couple years ago stating that as a condition of receiving OWGR points, sponsor's exemptions in these events had to be given to players in the world top 50. But everyone in the media seems to be assuming Tiger will play the Chevron, despite the very real possibility that he'll fall out of the top 50 before then.

I think it's a matter of, "Tiger, nobody in the US is gonna watch this made for TV Ryder Cup wannabe if you're healthy and at home. Dan Hicks might actually be on a suicide watch. Wanna play?"

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
