Hey guys im a new forum member.

Ive been golfing for 5 or 6 years (not serious) and just recently been starting to care more about it. Im an o.k. golfer with about an 18 handicap. I feel like i could be a way better golfer but my game is not consistent.

So my problem is either "chunking" or "chilli-dippin". I tend to hit behind the ball or hit it fat.

Any advice, drills or technique to improve ball striking and shot consistency?

I'm a 'long' golfer and tend to hit a slight draw.

Hard to tell without a video but as a guess I would say it could be you are lifting your head early or are swinging with too quick a tempo. It's amazing how much keeping your head down and not overswinging can improve your swing. Stare at the back of the ball and make a smooth swing.


If you aren't playing consistent golf, 9 times outa 10 it is due to poor fundamentals.  There could be many many reasons you are constantly hitting the ball fat


it could be you dive on the backswing, keeping your head still will help,

as i'm a smoker, i practised with a sig. in my mouth pointing it to the ball,

making my backswing the sig. still has to point to the ball, if not there is a problem.

for non smokers a pencil also works

i played today and kept my head down, slowed my tempo and it really worked. Although there were less chunks and fat hits i wasnt focused enough on the striking itself. Therefore i had a few more fades/draws that were unnecessary

Without video it is hard to say but when I am fat I am not transferring my weight.

Nice swing but the club head is almost down to your waist at the end of your backswing. Also you should take a video with you actually hitting a ball (even if it's just a plastic ball). Practice swings are just not the same as actual swings.


I have one with me hitting a ball. Its a larger file but identical swings. I'll try to get one from the range later this week.

Im was in the same boat as you, was a weekend warrior shooting 100+ and never consistent, even though i could hit decent golf shots

the biggest difference for me was my pre-shot routine, i will not hit a golf ball otherwise.,....my routine

stand behind the ball and choose a club, take a small practice swing to feel the weight, does it fit my eye for the shot?

address the ball, stepp back and take two practice swings,

address the ball, then straighten the legs and stand up straight, bend knees, bend from the hips with arms at a 45ish degree angle to ensure the club soles properly and im the right distance to/from the ball

my consistency has increased 10 fold just from that.

ive played two round back to back and only had one bad contact...........

now jsut to work on everything else like putting, distance control, club choice etc etc

I think you are getting too 'excited' on seeing were your ball will go. Focus on keeping your head down, try to keep your head stable throughout the swing.

Or go see a local golf pro.

If I don't say it, someone else will... So, here goes...

Have you ever had any lessons? It's already mid-summer, but a lesson might help you find the one or two things you need to do to solidify your swing. A good pro could help you more in 15 minutes than you could find out with two months of hit and miss tests.

If you're willing to put in a little practice, the pro can give you a developmental path to shore up your entire swing.

If I had to say anything, I would probably shorten your swing and keep your left arm straight.

So if you have video of a swing with a ball that you did your comparison to, why not post the swing with ball? At a minimum, someone might see an issue with your ball placement.

Used to struggle with fat shots myself.  From your video I see 2 things I think would help.  On the front view, watch your hips on the backswing.  See how you sway to your right??  You'll never hit the ball consistently if your hips a moving all over.  And it looks like you're a little steep coming down.  Another thing that will contribute to fat shots.  I worked on both those things with my pro and it's helped my game alot.
