I am a reasonably big hitter for my size, i typically hit my driver 260 yards carry

And long irons off the tee are no problem what so ever.

However, when it comes to hitting 4,5,6 off the fairway, i seem to struggle to get a penetrating ball flight. I sometimes find it easier to hit them from the rough.

Any tips/drills to overcome this?

thanks

Probably flipping. Try the Flying wedge drill.

i generally dont hit a divot because the ground is so hard at the moment. so yes i tend to 'pick the ball' off the turf, almost like a tee shot..

Flip.

You don't want to de-loft a long iron much, but a few degrees, yes.

No, sorry, I'm saying you're likely flipping. Not that you want to flip. :-)

I should say place your ballposition little more to the right foot, that way you have a slightly steaper angle in on the ball,

this way you should make better contact! and get a better contact, you should keep your ball pos. left of center tho.

You don't want to pick the ball up off the tee either.

This probably isn't true.  Take a slow motion face-on video and watch your hands and clubhead before and after impact, flipping IS picking the ball up.  It's almost impossible to properly hit down on the ball without taking a divot afterwards.

Take a gander:
