I first re-gripped my wedge and 9 iron with the N Dur grips.

Seemed to help my chipping...

So I decided to do my 7 and 8 irons as well...

But now my 7 iron carry distance has dropped by 10-12 yards!

My old velvet grips felt thinner while N Dur have more bite & feel larger?

Could it be I just sabotaged my own game with new grips?

Anyone else have experience with N Dur grips losing distance?

If you put on the Performance Plus(see link) ,they are not tapered as much as convention grip.  I love them.because of less shock to hands and I don't have to build up under right hand with 3 layers of tape!

What shaft do you have in the Exotics 3 wood? I have the Aldila Voo Doo and I think I have to move up to a stiffer flex. I have an abrupt swing at impact but still under100MPH I have a regular flex and can't seem to keep the Voo Doo on track. It's too bad they don't make a firm flex. I hit my Ping Rapture with a regular flex but heavy 85 gram Aldila proto type. It goes as far as my R9 driver. It's too heavy to hit that for 18 holes though. Now I have dropped the weight in my shaft to a stiff flex Adams Red line 3 wood. It doesn't go as far as the heavier Rapture but it's alot easier on my 62 year old body at the end of the day. I still hit it 200 with the Redline. Maybe I'll try a new shaft in the CB2, it does have a hot face on it. Thanks.

Grips causing a major distance loss?  Ummm  no.  Never heard of anything remotely close.  Sure, the grip may change the swingweight a 1/4 of a point or something, but 12 yards with a short iron?

Call me skeptical.  Something else has to be going on.  Ball, wind, etc.  If you are claiming distance loss on the range, forget it.  Those balls have been hit 1,000,000 times each.

Did you install the standard or midsize on the 9i and wedge?  What about the 7 and 8 irons?

The standard N Dur grips are only 5-7g heavier than most any other grip, the midsize are 16-18g heavier.  The standard grips wouldn't weigh enough to make a difference (5g on the grip end = 1 SW point), but could be a touch thicker than you are use to.  But if you installed the midsize, that would definitely make a noticeable difference in the feel of the grip in your hands, and the swingweight would drop by about 3 - 3.5 points.  You probably wouldn't feel 1 point, but you might notice 3.  That alone wouldn't cause you to lose distance, but you might unknowingly be making some swing corrections to compensate for the different feel.

Otherwise, if you are basing the distances using range balls like Bryan SD2 mentioned, go out and hit your own (golf) balls and see what happens.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
