Playing a par three course the other day with a friend I came across an example of how golfers should behave toward each other.  The course was busy with players on all holes and a little bit of a wait.  The tee box for the 4th hole is adjacent to the green for hole 3 AND well within errant ball range if you catch one that goes left.  That is what happened when my buddy tee'd off on three.  It was a left bound shot helped with a gust of wind to the left that headed for the guy waiting to tee off on hole four.  Yelled fore and he ducked.  The ball landed about 10' from where he was standing.  We apologized for the near miss and he told us not to worry about it.  When we got up to tee off on hole four the errant ball was waiting for us on the tee box.  He had retrieved it from the tall grass and left it for us.  That is the way it should be.

Thanks but no thanks. Nice of him to spot it for you. I'd rather see the ball and play it according to whatever rules apply. Please don't pick my ball up for me. That said, it was a nice gesture from a guy who was in a position where mnay guys would be angry for the near miss.

I don't think I have ever seen anyone get mad at another player after they had heard the hitter yell fore (unless they were getting hit into by the group behind them). A few weeks ago we had 4 close calls from the same group. We gave them a gentle ribbing about trying to hit us and we all kind of got a chuckle out of it. Yell fore and I'm gonna duck, thanks for the heads down warning.

Really at a par 3 course? I understand playing by the rules and I'm a big believer in playing by the rules. That being said if I'm at a par 3 course it's because I'm practicing my irons or just enjoying an evening with friends who are learning. I would move the ball out of the weeds for someone including myself it's not like I can enter the score for my handicap. I would understand your point if it was at an 18 hole course but not much applies to a par 3 course.

Champ,

I'm just saying that I would never presume that you would be fine with me moving your ball -- even on a par 3 course. Who knows what kind of game you might be playing. (We play for quarters but play by the rules and are very competitive. It is not about the money. It is about winning a point.) You may be about to break a personal record on that course that you've played for years and really want to count every stroke. And in that same spirit, I'd rather no one assume that I'd want my ball moved even if they are trying to be helpful. I'm not the kind of guy to get upset by someone trying to help me. But I'd rather they show me where the ball is and let me touch it if I'm not going to play it.

Good story. I normally have all good experiences on the course. What I can't stand are the impatient 70 year olds who always seem to hit into me. Granted they only drive like 150 but still it's ignorant. One time, this guy drove up behind us in his cart and told us we needed to speed up paly after hitting into us for 3 holes. We had played 4 holes in 30 minutes in a group of four. No idea how we didn't leave him in the dust but i was just getting irritated at how there was a ball within 20 yards of me every time i went to my ball. We told a ranger and he set the guy straight. I'm not normally the type to get upset I normally just shake it off and tell the guy he can wait because his groupmof 70 year olds shouldn't be playing at that pace anyways, but after 4 holes of getting hit I couldn't take it anymore

I know, why play golf if your going to get pissed. The only time i ever got upset was when the guy thought i was waving him down to the par 3 green. That was interesting, We both kept our cool though, i was wipping off sweat from my brow and i can see were he thought i was waving him down to the green. But i know alot of people wouldn't be so accepting of the mistake, its a shame.
