Wonder how much they will regret this contract when he is 37 and a ghost shell of what he is now...

$40 Mil Guaranteed

An expiring contract after last season meant the Eagles had to designate Vick their franchise player to protect his rights this year, in which he would have made around $16 million.

By signing this new agreement, he actually will make less this year, enabling the Eagles to possibly free up enough space under the salary cap to work out a similar long-term extension with star wide receiver DeSean Jackson , who is in the final year of his rookie deal.

I just read the full article on BSPN and didn't realize 40 was guaranteed...still seems like a bit of a head scratcher to sign a 31 year old ATHLETIC QB for that much, especially considering the way he plays the game. The Eagles might have doomed their franchise if Vick gets hurt and they traded a very capable Kevin Kolb for an overrated CB.

Its the NFL. Ignore the length of the contract and total amount and look at the guaranteed money.  I am guessing this is really more like a 3 year deal at 15 million a year. I am guessing both Manning and Brady's contracts will also look bad in the final year or two but some QBs are still decent as they approach 40. Not many though...

While I do slightly agree with you...Manning and Brady do not rely their athleticism as Vick does...Vick's fundamentals are atrocious at best while Manning and Brady could hit a fly on **** at thirty yards (exaggeration of course). As Vick ages, which is inevitable,  his athleticism will diminish as well...resulting in a 15 mil/yr QB that has the fundamentals of a 5th grader.

I would be extremely surprised if he actually makes it to the end of this year. Keep in mind, he still owes $19 million to his creditors, so add tax to that and he's going to see a small fraction of the guaranteed money.

Yeah a bit of an exaggeration. Vick completed more 40+ yard passes than both Brady and Manning despite only playing 12 games. He also had a higher percent of 20+ yards per attempt than Manning and Brady. Not saying he is the be all end all but he is certainly a better option than McNabb or Kolb at this point. If they can protect him and he has a year like last they have a decent chance of getting to the Superbowl (assuming their D is solid). From where I sit if they don't make it to the bowl or lose in the bowl it's not much different than going 0-16 during the regular season.

Completion's are not the only thing you can factor in when assessing how effective a QB is going to be as he nears the end of his career. I'm just saying that Vick does not practice effective fundamentals, therefore he will not have the longevity of a guy like Manning, Brady...or even the ageless Bret Favre. I do agree with you about not making it to the Super Bowl though...hopefully my Cowgirls will fare a smidge better than last year...fingers crossed.

Ignore Brady, I saw on Sportscenter he has a 4 year deal and given Brady's age that is a decent gamble. I am not saying Vick is better than Manning. What I am saying is that there are a lot of QBs that have been successful at 35-37. The list of QBs that broke down between 37 and 40 on the other hand is huge.  The number that continued to play at a high level past 38 is really small.  As you get older it it gets harder and harder to recover. Those sore ribs that are healed in a day at 25 take 3 days at 35 and a week at 40. The other factor is the out of the contract. My understanding is that Vick can bet cut after 3 year without an insane cap hit while Manning is practically guaranteed all his 90 million  if he can pass a physical. Given that Manning hasn't recovered in almost 9 months from a neck injury, I would be worried about his continued ability to play 16+ games a season. How age is going to effect Vick is hard to say. Not getting hit for a couple of years probably helps extend it. On the other hand it is hard to imagine Vick playing if he he loses a step. If I was an eagle fan though, I would worry more that last year was a bit flukey and Vick regress back to his Atlanta level of play (yeah I know he had crappy receivers then). It will make an interesting couple of season however it turns out.

I agree with the vast majority of what you have said...and I dare say that towards the end of the season last year Vick did begin to revert to his ATL days.  As far as Manning goes though, and assuming his neck EVENTUALLY heals, he has far better fundamentals at the QB position than anyone in the league, save maybe Brady, imho. Vick is athletic. He poses such a great threat for that very reason and that very reason alone. He doesn't have the fundamentals of a Brady or Manning, therefore will not have the longevity. If I turn out to be wrong, then so be it...wouldn't be the first time. But as Charles Barkley so famously said "I may be wrong, but I doubt it."

To be fair, his fundamentals are getting better. They will continue to get better under Andy Reid. For the first time in his career/life, he is working hard at improving rather than just relying on his athletic ability. Sure, sometimes he will fall into old habits as we all do, but he is becoming a better QB.

The Barkley saying that comes to my mind is "Knucklehead"?

As an avid Falcons fan, I know this script all too well. I would bet that Vick's Superman impression will curtail soon and he will revert to half-assing it, since this contract means he doesn't have to prove himself. He will be a decent QB this season, but I would be highly surprised if he put stats in the top ten this year. I would expect an even worse performance next year.

I suppose one bright spot in this deal is that he now has the cash to repay many of his creditors (as managed by the court appointed debt manager) including the Falcons, which may well result in the Falcons getting a cap credit as recovery to the unearned signing bonus dollars. Knowing the NFL, they'll probably figure out a way to keep the Falcons from gaining any value back from this whole debacle.

Grumpter are you a disgruntled Eagles fan? I meant no offense...lol

No offense taken. Vick has been working on trying to become a better all around quarterback rather than just quickly going through his reads before deciding to take off and run. He needs some better protection from the O-Line and to learn when to just get rid of the ball. We'll see if the work pays off but even if he fails it's no worse than any other Eagles season so far.

I agree with this 110% Grump...but in a pinch, he seems to resort back to older tactics imho.
