Look at the picture and tell me if this is normal wear and tear on a Callaway X Series Vintage Jaws Wedge. I have used this wedge for about 5-10 rounds of golf. I have used it at least once a round to hit it out of a sand bunker. Besides that, it was never used to hit out of rocky areas or anything like that.

This is my first set of vintage Callaway wedges, so I do not know how fast the black is supposed to turn into a metallic color. I hope I did not get ripped off by buying a fake set of wedges. As far as I know, they feel and sound really good when I hit it. They look and feel comparable to the ones that are in display at Golfsmith.

After reading a lot of material on the internet about lots of people selling fake golf gear, I want to make sure that this wedge is 100% authentic, just to give me better peace of mind. The black color wearing off is the only thing making me question whether  they're fake or real, so I wanted to know if this wear and tear was normal.

Thanks in advance!

Looks typical to me -- when you use a raw wedge, the sole is the first to go - the sole and the face where ball meets sweet spot.

Looks normal to me... if you take it to a range that has mats it will really work the finish off.

Yea..I did forget to mention that I go to the range often, about 2-3 times a week. What can I say, I'm addicted to golf. That could be the cause of my worn down clubs. haha

Yoi should have posted a picture of the face, but that is what a wedge like that would look like after one round if it was used a dozen times.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Here is a picture of the face. Some of the black coming off, but not too severely. It doesn't look as bad, so I didn't bother putting it up (GMAT in the background...fun stuff)

That thing looks pretty fresh to me. If you think thats worn... do you replace all your clubs every 5 rounds?

Haha. I wish I had the money to replace clubs every five rounds. I was just wondering if this was normal wear and tear for a new wedge because it is my first wedge. Recently, I have been questioning its authenticity because it seemed like the sole was getting worn down relatively quickly. I was also feeling skeptical because I bought the wedges for such a cheap price on Craigslist. Besides the black coming off, the wedge feels and look authentic compared to the models that I see in Golfsmith.

Thanks for giving me some more peace of mind guys!

Looks good to me. I have the x-forged wedges and I love them. also, good luck on the GMAT. I just got done taking them a few months ago

Yea. I love the way my wedges feel. Do you mind me asking what schools you were planning on applying to?

Here is what my 60* looks like. The whole sole has turned almost silver. I would say your wedges are showing normal wear.

Wow. So that's what my wedges will look like in a couple of months. Is the 60* wedge the wedge you use the most often?

Ya, I use my 60* for anything inside 70 yards. Your wedges will start to rust as well. My 52* has some rust showing on it already. It's normal though.

Zack, thanks for posting pictures of the wedges to show me what a used Callaway wedge looks like. I will be expecting it to look like that soon. Thanks to everyone else who responded!

HAHA!!! Googled gmat on the sand trap to chase one of my posts up, and find this post!! Another golfer that went through the GMAT agony!!

I have the Jaws Slate finish. Needless to say the slate finish is long gone and the rust is starting to build. I'll post pics of them but they look like I left them buried in wet sand for a week. I've thought about oil-canning them but I think I'll just let nature to continue its course.

How exactly do you do that? and does it cause the clubs to decay faster? I have Chrome Jaws wedges and hate the glare I get off them.

Well, I've read that you heat it with a torch slowly until it becomes a rainbow-ish color then quench it in oil. But you have to be careful not to melt the epoxy and/or the ferrule. I play with fire for a living but I'm gonna try it on some old junk wedges before I ruin a $100 club. As for yours, you would have to find away to remove the chrome first. That I don't know how to do off hand.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
