i tried to use the tips from this video:

however they didn't seem to work for me.  i likely need more practice, but before i commit to this, can anyone advise on their best tips for side-hill lies (ball below or above the feet)?

i understand that the ball will hook/slice based on the lie, but the tips from the above video imply that with the proper balance, you can hit it straight.  i'd like that instead of trying to guess as to how far my ball will curve and play into that.

thanks!

The tip I received on a sidehill lie is to imagine an airplane wing on the slope.

That will tell you which way the ball will curve.

It's almost impossible to hit it straight off a sidehill lie, at least for an amateur.

i guess i would say it depends on how severe the side hill lie is.  The demonstration this instructor is showing is not severe at all.  It is quite easy to hit a straight ball off what he is showing.  There are some side hill lies that there is no way to hit straight (or very difficult).

We have nine holes on our course that can easily give you a sever above/below feet lie, that's still not including the uphill/downhill lies. The way I teach the kids is the ball will go with the slope of the hill, seems to be the easiest way to remember it. Some things to be careful on when the ball is above your feet is not lifting out of the shot and your feet moving, obviously not an issue with spikes. When you have enough experience with them you can really hit some nice shots but it takes some practice. Then you get the fun with uphill/downhill lies at the same time of having the ball above/below your feet.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

well, its simple physics that the ball will not likely go straight off of sidehill lies.  Hold a club up parallel to the ground and note the way the face is pointing.  On top of that, to hit a ball above your feet, your swing plane must become flatter(draw inducing) and to hit a ball below your feet, your swing will become steeper(fade inducing)

with the ball above my feet, I choke down and also stand taller than normal because the ball is closer to my body.  With the choke down, I have more control.  When the ball is below my feet, I get a little more knee bend and really make sure to maintain my posture through the swing.  Its another one of those golf shots that just takes time and practice to understand and get the feel for.

If a sidehill lie is enough that you think about where the ball will curve, then I wouldn't try to manipulate myself into making a swing that would send the ball straight.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

I've been a little digging trying to figure how to hit fade from a hook lie and vice versa. I have a few thoughts and have seen it done but have never practised it. Suggestions welcomed and thanx in advance.

Last Sunday's tournament I had two of these side hill shots. Both were from behind a tree with a hook lie. The first I had fairway to work with and so played a knock down draw, nine iron, ball back, normal setup. The shot came off great and straighter than expected. For the second shot and being circa 10 penalty shots out of it I thought I would experiment a little and try to hit a fade. I played a seven iron, opened the face 30 degrees, normal setup, normal ball position and hit the perfect push draw. No fade, nothin just straight up and over the fence ob. Now that I have written this I'm thinking I could have hit a low fade by playing the ball back.

    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
