Yes because smoking is the only possible method to get nicotine in your system...........  Some people just don't think.

As a non smoker, I agreed with what you said up until this point.

One of the regulars in my Saturday group smokes and although I detest the habit, I can't really say it bothers me in a non confined space, but thank goodness it is now banned in pubs and restaurants here!

Regarding the bit I snipped above, for every George Burns there are  thousands of people who died 30 years before they could have.

For an argument that you presented well in the bulk of your post, I thought it was a pretty weak example.

I HATE smoking, but if I was playing golf with you, if you asked if I minded if you smoked I would almost be embarrassed if you asked me - I would say no problem, smoke away.

On the other hand, if you teed up with strangers and asked the same question and someone said they DO mind, wouldn't it be uncomfortable for the rest of te round?

Given that it's legal, I don't really think you should ask. Inside it's different.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I despise chewing gum.  Think it is the single worst consumer product on the market.

Not to mention that I refuse to touch something that someone else has just spit out.  No way of telling where that mouth has been.  My father-in-law's course has banned sunflower seeds from the course.  It's a small semi-private 9 hole course, and they take the ban seriously.

In Colorado you can't smoke in  bars any more than any other public place.  I'm a long time ex-smoker (quit in the late 70's), and I avoid any tobacco smoke like it was poison gas.  I know smokers who smell like an old ashtray if you get within 10 feet of them.  I know others who never seem to get that odor.

I truly deplore the trend of smoking cigars on the golf course.  Cigar smokers don't seem to care that most us actually prefer the air to smell like green, growing things.  I can smell a cigar even when it's 100 yards upwind from me.  I shouldn't have to live with that every time I want to play golf.  Most of those guys would never even think of lighting up one of those foul stogies in their own back yards and pissing off their wives and neighbors, but they're puffing away the moment they get to the course.  Why do they think that golfers are bothered less than anyone else?

It's hard to know what will be any single golfer's pet peeve.

I have never seen someone smoking during a marathon or the Tour de France ... don't see why it should improve performance ... it will probably decrease performance in those that do smoke, but so will not eating or drinking ...

I am however astounded by the government rules enforced on US Citizens .. rather odd for a country that thinks the rest of the world are a bunch of socialists and commies ...

It has to do with personal freedoms, not political philosophy. Anyone is free to smoke as long as that smoke doesn't infringe on anyone else's freedom to breathe clean air. Indoors that can be difficult and costly to control, so it's generally easier to just ban smoking in buildings and businesses open to the public, and the ban also extends to restaurants which have outdoor seating areas. It's probably taking it a bit far to ban smoking on golf courses, but then California's reputation for over-reacting is legendary.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
