Question about Simulators

I  went to golf galaxy the other day to compare my current driver to the new r11 driver. My average ball speed was 169mph, and the machine was saying my average drive was 312yds. I hit a few that were about 330yds. However when I am on the course, I tend to hit 295yds, once in a while over 300yds. Are these machines off or do you think when I get to the course I don't tend to release like I do when I am on a simulator?

Most people (myself included) believe simulators in golf stores tend to report numbers that are on the high side to encourage people to buy new club.  It could be you were more relaxed or had a smoother swing that day as well.

I've always wondered about how the simulator calculates roll.

Is there a way to change the settings to increase or decrease roll?

I play in Vermont and we typically don't get great roll because of the wet conditions. I would be very interested to learn how the simulators are set up.

Are they set up for hard pan?

That would seem to corroborate the argument that they simulators are set to increase distance.

Another thought.....

Have you ever notice a difference in the simulators at a golf shop vs. the simulators at an indoor golf center?

It would seem that indoor golf operators would not set the simulators up to report on the high side as they are not typically trying to sell clubs (at least the place I go to Vermont Indoor Golf - South Burlington, VT.)

All i care about is carry...

Believe me i was on a golf machine that said i hit it 360 yards. I think it was because it was based on a normal distribution with the mean around the average player, and i was at the upper end, so it went to shit.

But besides that, don't believe them at all. Best place to try a club out is at a demo day..

The AboutGolf simultors(the only ones endorsed by the PGA Tour and the ones used on the GolfChannel) seem to be about as accurate as I have ever witnessed.  Like down to a couple yards of accuracy in my case, relative to my GPS.  I have played maybe 20 rounds on them this year and they seem to be right on and my "numbers" translate well to the course.


Your mileage may vary.  I don't know the brand that is being used in Golf Galaxy or other stores...but I can give the AboutGolf ones a thumbs up on accuracy.

Distance is one thing to consider, but accuracy of ball flight is another.

For example I've tested a sim that told me my clubface was 2.1° to the right, and the path was 5.5° to the right... and the ball pushed and never drew back at all.

You obviously didn't catch it is the middle of the club then. When I was fitting for my driver, I hit a few shots with impact tape to see where I was hitting it on the face as some of the numbers didn't seem right. On a few shots, it really felt as if I hit the ball in the centre of the face but I'd actually caught it slightly towards the bottom. Once again, feel ain't real.

Yes, I did. Club was a 6I. To get that much cut bias I'd have to shank it.

The simulator had the ball flight laws wrong. Pretty common among some of them.

Jeez! From what I've heard, you can only really rely on TrackMan data. Even Flightscope is unreliable.

Flightscope is pretty good. Until AboutGolf developed their own 3Track/3Trak camera-based system they used Flightscopes. Flightscope just seems to get some more erroneous results that need to be discarded than TM. I think it's more to do with the software, too, which is disappointing since FS has had so long to catch up.

I have worked at a golf store with launch monitors and they are set up to be longer. Not because they want you to buy the club but because of have the all the numbers are translated by the computer to give a ball flight. The computer is assumes that you are hitting under ideal conditions and that the ball has been struck in the center of the clubface. The main reason they you hit it longer on simulators is because they poorly judge roll, meaning that the ball rolls much farther on the simulator than you would get on the course.

However simulators are the best way to compare clubs.

We are not sure which to buy for our new golf academy. We are being quoted 9,000 Euros to buy a FS and 20,000 Euros for a TrackMan. That's a big difference for the odd erroneous result...

There's a bit more to it than that.

We ended up with a Trackman, if that matters.

      Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

      A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.

      That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.

      No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
