Why is there so many top players missing? Luke Donald is missing for obvious reasons, but what about everyone else?

No Simpson, Johnson, Stricker, Laird, Woodland, Mickelson, Snedeker, Watson, Tiger, Kuchar, Day, Fowler etc?

Anyway, looking forward to this.

I don't know much about the event. Does it count for anything on the Tour that your list of players would care about? Those guys are pretty flush with money, so maybe they just want some time off?

It's one of the 4 World Golf Championships and counts as a PGA Tour win..........

It must not count for the money title or else you would think Simpson would be in. Those guys don't need this tournament to retain their cards for next year, so my guess is that they just don't care and want a rest.

Eh, it's the weakest of them. It's an official event but the money doesn't count towards the money list and some other weird stuff.

Most of them have played it in previous years though haven't they? Lefty has won it twice (although 1 of them was pre WGC) and Tiger always played in it when he could. I'm just wondering what's different this year. Seems strange.....if the field doesn't improve next year they will either have to change the date or else change what event is the 4th WGC...

Maybe the players are waiting for it to be officially declared the 5th major.

Is Tiger even exempt? I'm looking at their website and most of the invites come from winning. PGA Tour, Euro Tour, Asian Tour, Japan Tour. There are a few exemptions for OWGR inside the top 25, a few for Fall Series events, and a few for Order of Merit. I don't know about the other guys though. They probably just don't want to play during the short off season they do have.

That's a good point actually, I didn't even think of considering that. Looking at the site it appears not! He finished 6th last year, surprising the top 10 or so aren't automatically exempt.

Greetings .... The WGC-HSBC situation -- money is not official; win is official if player is a regular PGA Tour member --- is a quirky one indeed. The (click-on »») scheduling for the 2012 PGA Tour where the HSBC is scheduled before C.M.N. Walt Disney hints of a possible change of status quo for the WGC event, although nothing at all has been said of this as of now. I can remember when the British Open Championship was recognized by everyone in creation -- EXCEPT for the PGA Tour!! It was not until 1990 that the PGA Tour begin awarding 10-yr exempt status (5-yrs, 1998-after) for British Open winners. However they still would not count money and stats as official, nor give official victory credit to current and past Open winners. In 1995, the British Open became a fully official PGA Tour event, but the Tour still did not give official victory credit to all past winners. In 2002, the PGA Tour chose to recognize pre-1995 Open Championship wins as official. Greg Norman was the immediate beneficiary of this decision, as it raised his official PGA Tour win total to 20, thus giving the Great White Shark Life Member Status. At the time of the 2002 decision on pre-1995 British Open wins, Norman was on restricted non-member status for failing to play a minimum of 12 events (Veteran Member status privilege) in 2001. If Norman's two British Open wins (1986, 1993) had counted as official prior to 2001, then the Life Membership status would have kicked in, and he would NOT have been placed on restricted status!!! Greetings ..... RE WGC-HSBC Qualifications ..... 2011 Field (minimum of 78 players) In the case of World Rankings, the event invites such players based on where they stand on the OWGR list as it was published some 2-3 weeks prior to the current year's event (Oct 17th in 2011). The rest of the invitations are based on performance within the last 12 calendar months -- be it either tournament wins or standing on the various points/or money lists of the major international tours that co-sanction the HSBC event. So, if you haven't done anything since the 2010 WGC-HSBC that would qualify you in any one of the listed categories -- you do not get invited for 2011. Of course, even if you do get invited, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to show up. So, there! Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport

I got up at 3am to watch it. Safe to say I'm exhausted now. Set up for a great weekend though with so many top names lurking. Kaymer is slowly getting back to where he was last year too by the looks of it. I expect a good weekend from him.

Watching Rory play the last 2 days is so frustrating. 5 bogeys in the first 2 rounds and 3 of them are 3 putts Driving is magnificent though.... 3rd in Distance and 4th in Accuracy.

Does anybody knows what happened to Matteo on the first day? I think the last time he scored +10 he was 12...

A mixture of the course playing long and wet and him having 36 putts. I can't believe he is still 18.

Rory's got this, he's playing too well, all he needs is the putter to work and he'll get it done, the rest of his game has been awesome!

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
