I am fairly new to golf, and I have a pretty weak drive. Mostly because of my slice, and my ball flight just doesn't look right at all. I see these really good golfers, and they hit the ball and it goes straight out and seems to carry up in the air, while my shot looks like it just baloons up and over. Its like comparing at straight line at a 30 degree angle or so, to a half oval... Also when I was testing out drivers at golfsmith I saw on the shot tracker that my backspin is incredibly high, so that may play a factor in this. So my question for you is, how do you create that kind of carry on the swing?

Backspin does indeed play a role in this problem.

Excessive backspin will cause shots that balloon, hurting distance.

Better players strike the ball in such a way that they create high launch, but low spin. This allows for a trajectory that starts out low and climbs steadily with good carry and roll.

I would suggest you work on correcting your slice, and for 99% of slicers, that means changing their current out-in path to an in-out path.

A swing video would be ideal, but it's very likely you fit that description.

Fixing your slice will not only make you happier, it will limit your backspin most likely. : )

work on dropping the club from the inside,,, if you are at address, try to hit the inside of the ball.  you are most likely hitting the outside.

The other way around, in to out.

Keep your right elbow closely connected to your hip during downswing. But no-one will know exactly, as it would require more knowledge about your current swing.

Everyone's swing is a bit different, and some are very different.

But what has made my swing a lot more consistent was the following:

At address, stick your hips out to the left a bit and aim your belt buckle slight to the right of center.  Keep your lower body fairly quiet during the back swing, i.e. try not to move or rotate your legs too much on the back swing.  Instead, rotate at the waist.  Keeping your lower body from rotating while rotating your upper body at the waist will create tension in your torso.

This does two things for me:

1) It promotes a more in to out swing

2) Releasing the tension in the torso during the downswing forces me to use my core to swing rather than my arms.  This also helps promote an in to out swing as you're less likely to "come over the top" which is a very common problem amongst golfers.  It also helps with consistency as there are fewer moving parts.

Hope this helps.

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
