How many of you have broken a golf ball?

I have broken many golf balls.  I have a Net Return golf net.  It sends the ball back to you so you only need to use 1 ball to practice.  I practice a lot.  A ball usually lasts me about 2 months of practice before it cracks or breaks in half.

It can make a big difference in flight and distance, depending on how big the crack is and exactly where the crack is in relation to the impacting club face.

On some very small hairline cracks sometimes the ball flies fairly well, but just not as good as it should. Those are the ones I hate because I might not notice it at first and just think I'm not hitting the ball very well.

Another reason for me to quit playing with old balls I find.

Ha ha! I don't think anybody is bragging about breaking balls from any kind of athletic prowess, at least I hope not.

Older balls that have been laying around for a while just crack. I keep about 100 old balls in the yard to practice with and I would say that close to 1/3 of them are cracked. When the cracks get bad enough I just tee them up and hit them down in the woods (if they hold together long enough to go that far).

Kind of reminds me of the "Golden Ram" golf balls from back in the '70's. Guaranteed to not "smile" or they'd give you another one free. But hitting a piece of gravel would provide more feel than hitting one of those rocks. I would never hit them though my little brother had a certain affinity for them. And this was back in the day when any golf ball in decent shape was a luxury and a new ball was something wonderous to behold. But back to your point - nope, have never broken a ball with a swing from a club. Have hit a few range balls that had been split by a mower but nothing where I caused the damage.

I don't know if I have...I've hit a couple crappy balls really off line and blamed it on the ball.  Now that I think of some of those shots it would make sense that the cover got destroyed.  I remember one such occasion last season.  I wasn't playing typically well so my playing partner tossed me a Titleist Velocity (I think, had orange numbers).  The first hole I played it on I hated it but continued with it anyway.  I remember on the second hold, which turned out to be a par 3, I "shanked" a 4 or 5 iron straight left and the ball made one of the oddest sounds I've ever heard.  The ball went into some tall grass and since I didn't like the ball in the first place I never went to search for it.  Now I'm wondering if that odd whistling sound was possibly the ball breaking...one will never know!

I cut many a golf ball open with a hack saw as a kid. 1970's/80's golf ball core = poor man's Crazy Ball.

P.S. and the Titleist of those time would smile back at ya if you hit them wrongly right.
