You could always just learn to swing it better.  Depends on whether you prefer the cash, or some added distance (with some work involved).

1.) I would go to a club fitter and make sure your driver is fit correctly for your swing.

2.) Once you have a properly fit driver, get on a launch monitor and compare your driver and your 3W.

I can pretty much guarantee that if you have a properly fit driver, as a 12 Handicap you should be hitting your driver further - off a tee - than a 3W from the deck.  If this is not the case, then you should probably go get a lesson from a professional to determine how to get you into the proper impact area with the driver.

Good luck!

3-wood has more loft and a shorter shaft. You can easily check to see if you are hitting the driver near the sweat spot (either impact tape, powder, or just range balls). If you are hitting the sweat spot, then it likely mostly about the loft of your driver -- you need more. If you are missing the sweat spot, either swing easier, choke up a bit, leave the driver in your bag for a while.

used to slice like crazy with my 10.5 degree driver and could always count on my 3 wood off the tee/deck from rough,it was my safety club...i was hitting them roughly about the same distance (when i did hit a decent shot with the big dog that is) so i stayed with the 3 wood..ive recently bought a 13 degree driver which is more forgiving and i hit it about 10/12 yards further than my 3 wood at about 80% swing, maybe a loftier driver might help you like it did me??....good luck

I'm looking at your club setup in your signature, and you have two different shafts.  It could be that you're getting more speed with a lighter shaft in your 3-wood.  It could be that the bend profile is better (I see you're playing X-stiff in your driver).

My personal observations of my game, which certainly won't reflect everyone's experience.  I have the exact same shaft in my driver and 3-wood, except that the 3-wood is 2 inches shorter.  I have basically the same swing with both, so why not the same shaft?  Club manufacturers don't put the same shafts in the drivers and 3-woods as a matter of course, and I had to special order the 3-wood with the shaft I wanted.  I get very similar performance from both clubs, with the exception that the 3-wood is a bit shorter and I can hit it off the deck.  Because of the smaller head, the 3-wood is also easier to work right-to-left, which is one of the advantages of a 3-wood (as a general rule, it's easier to hit a draw with a 3-wood and a fade with a driver).

IMO, performance is all about the shaft.  Find a shaft that gives you the launch characteristics you like, and then work the lofts and lengths in so that the clubs complement one another.

There's nothing else I like more than hitting it farther. And when I hit it, I didn't

That pretty much sums up "don't like it"!

I had this exact same issue.  Exact same.  Solving it changed my game.

Search for a thread entitled "Hitting Down with your driver".  It is a fantastic thread.

For me, the reason this happened, is because I was concentrating on hitting "up" with the driver - which produced high, weak slices right.  With the 3 wood off the deck, I really get my hips into it and blast it.  My soution was to tee the driver up much lower (about the height of the driver) and move it back in the stance.  Then I hit it with the driver *Exactly like* a 3 wood off the deck.  After some experimentation with ball position (more forward leads to a slice for me, more back a hook), I found the spot where I could take my 3 wood off the deck swing with driver tee'd up really low and catch it just on the upswing.

Another thing that worked for me is hitting driver off the deck at the range, then slowly raising the tee height until I was crushing it.  Yeah, read that thread "Hitting down with the driver".  Great thread.  Added 50 yards to my driver and sent me from a 13 to a 9 overnight.  Go to the range and play around with teeing it up low and in the middle of your stance and hitting it just like an off-the-deck 3 wood.  it works.

I've found it's very helpful for dialing in distances to hit clubs of the same family through the bag as much as possible, i.e. TaylorMade r11 fws/driver,TM burner irons/hybrids, Cleveland cg family wedges, etc...

I was having a similar problem to yours with big gaps in my yardages until after last season I went about trying to get some more consistency through my bag, now I like to think I have pretty much all yardages covered.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
