Karrie Webb misplaces her marker, fan calls it out, saves two strokes.

Quote:

EVEN all-time greats have brain fades. When Yani Tseng asked Karrie Webb to move her marker one putter-head length to the side to clear her path on the 13th green yesterday, of course she obliged. Once Tseng had putted, the Australian moved her marker back one putter-head's distance, as is the rule.

But she also took it the wrong way - the same direction she had moved it in the first place, rather than placing it back where it had been. Standing over the putt for a bogey after somewhat of a meltdown on the short par-four (she had already gone from bunker to bunker and missed the green with her third, leaving a Royal Melbourne special of a downhill slider from the fringe), Webb heard a loud voice saying: ''Excuse me!''

Most people, not understanding the rules, would think this person was a dick for calling it out. Luke caught some criticism for calling the penalty on Rory last month, too. But in reality, getting a rules violation called on you is a huge favor; many of the rule violations are accidental or go unnoticed by the player, and if he or she doesn't realize it, they could end up DQed and lose not only the chance of winning, but lots of money and ranking points.

I'm just glad the spectator didn't wait until after the round, since he could have gotten her DQed if he wished.

From who???  I can't think of anyone who would hold that against Luke.....this is golf, not pick-up basketball

Yeah, but people who don't know crap about golf considered it like any other sport; if it was unintentional and the officials didn't see it. It's a really nitpicky rule, and the majority don't understand that it's a DQ if someone reports it after the fact.

My mom, Sportscenter, and my brother, none of whom know the least bit about the rules, all thought Luke was in the wrong. SC in particular made a joke about how Rory will have wanted to punch Luke in the face for calling the penalty... Couldn't be more ignorant, Luke saved Rory 231,000+ Euros in prize money as well as ranking points and a runner up finish. Maybe he would have gone unnoticed and won the event by a stroke, but that wouldn't be right.
