I've got a problem that has been wearing me out for 6 years now. No matter what improvements I make to my Golf Swing I can't fix this one problem.

On my takeaway, my hands lay off and the club starts out on an inside plane. I proceed to continue on this severely flat plane with a broken left wrist until I reach the parallel point, then my wrist bends back to normal and fixes the club position. From there my downswing is normal, but I still fall back sometimes on my back foot. (That's a whole other, more fixable problem.)

But what should I do about the layed off wrist? I just want to take the club straight back as I should and as I always do when practicing in front of a mirror. For some reason its a bad habit, and no matter how much I think I've fixed it, it always happens in my backswing without me knowing it. Is my problem in how I start my swing? Perhaps I should practice only using my body to rotate? Although when I think I've starting minimizing my arm/wrist usage it still seems to happen in my backswing... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Saw some cool stuff on TGC the other day, a Greg Norman driving special.

Cliff notes...

One piece takeaway till club is parallel to ground. Butt of club points to target. Wrist not cocking yet.

Get to hand shake position at this parallel point. Right hand doing the shake.
At this point, butt of club point to target.

Put ball on ground 18" behind teed ball. Slightly inside to be on swing plane.
Brush this ball on backswing. This goes with one piece takeaway and hand shake position.
Take super slow full swing shots with driver. Hit ball 50-60 yards.

Hover driver at address to avoid grip pressure changes.

This is a very, very hard habit to break. Ask me how I know!

Here's a good thread about it from a little while back.

Raymond Floyd did this.

My point is that if you don't need to fix this - if your "downswing is normal" and the inside takeaway isn't causing you problems from the top of your backswing and the downswing, then who cares if it's under the plane?

If you really want to fix it (because it's causing other problems), simply feel counter-rotation. Feel like the right hand stays on top of the club during the takeaway rather than rotating under. I'd add a little wrist hinge as well. Not a lot, but a little. Wrists hinge, right hand stays on top.

Again, Rickie Fowler would be your poster boy for exaggerating this move from A1 to A2.

Thanks Iacus, and also the reason I'm seeking change is because it takes time for my swing to develop if I continue to "wait" on my hands to get flipped back into the proper position, it will be much much much easier to just cock and load and fire when I can just carry it straight back and unload down the line. If not I'll continue to be the golfer I am right now, inconsistent with a dug from the ground short game. I've never thought about practicing feeling the right hand on top, I'll be sure to do that.

Feel reverse roll from p1 to p2 or like the club face is always facing the ball

I have the same problem when I'm starting the backswing only with my hands and arms.

To fix it I concentrate on starting the takeaway with my left shoulder.

It really helps fixing the problem (and you'll probably crush it 20-30 yds longer).

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
