Hi All,

I have just started playing again regularly and recently picked up some Bridgestone E6 balls as I was hooking and slicing, more slicing lately.  Have taken some lessons and this is improving quite a bit.  I normally go around in high 80's low 90's depending on the course, had a 98 today, but was a tough course which I had never played before.

The E6 are good and have helped me keep the ball straight, they just dont feel right to me, especially putting and around the greens wedge shots and chip shots not enough spin or feel around the greens.

I like a soft ball, today I hit some prov1 and prov1x which I enjoyed, much better around the greens and I putted way better with the prov1 v1x.  I did donate one or 2 out of bounds and one in the water, obviously they are fairly pricey.  Since I am modifying my swing I am cautious of losing too many prov1x.

I was looking at maybe trying the TM Penta or maybe the Srixon Z star.  I can get the TM Penta mint grade for around $29, the Srixon Z star for $25 and the Prov1 for around $39-$49.

What would you guys recommend, after something relatively soft, prefer the soft feel, and someting that gives me some more feel spin and better on the greens putting etc than the Bridgestone E6.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

may I recommend the 20XI-S from Nike. You said like a soft ball, and these are halfway between Pro V1 and Pro V1X. The driver is EXPLOSIVE; high launch, low spin. Irons are longer than Pro V1, and you can control the flight well, and spin if you have the ability to. Wedges stop quick, sometimes just hit and stop. Purely guessing, you seem to have a low swing speed, just based on your high scores like mine. If that's the case, this ball is perfect for you, as it was for me, because it gives easy distance with a CRUSHED kind of feel, plus heaps of spin when you need, which is good because at a low speed, it's hard to generate a lot of spin.

Why would slow swing speed have anything to do with high scores?  I don't think this is a reasonable assumption.

to the OP, a friend of mine used http://golfballselector.com/ and found it to be very helpful.

like I said, simply a guess, because a lot of beginnners have yet to learn how to truly swing quick, and transfer their weight correctly.

I played ProV1x until my wife bought me a dozen of the NXT Tour. They are great. Lower trajectory and better roll for me, so I'm sold. They are a little harder off the putter, but still a great ball.

Top Flight Gamer V2.  Nice distance off the tee, fair spin around the greens... and for around $20, best bang for the buck imo

Wow, Z stars for $25? I love the z star but their 44 when I have seen them. I have been playing q stars usually for 25 a dozen. They fly straight. I rarely lose one anymore. I do like the z star a bit more around the green though, it's a bit softer feel. I have no complaints about the q stars though; they are great balls that I'd compare the Titleist NXTs.

Clarky,

I would recommend you take a look at http://hotlist.golfdigest.com/content/hotlist/balls/balls-all.php . The list is from 2011 but is still pretty relevant.

I went from the e6 to the e5 and like the extra feel around the green. They do cut up a little more though. Also used to play a Titleist NXT Tour which was pretty similar to the e5.

If you want cheaper golf balls at near mint condition, check out http://www.squizzysgolf.com.au/ . They are based in Albury, NSW and also have an ebay store. You can grab great buys. I got 50 mint e5 for about $50 shipped to Melbourne.

Thanks Binga, I will check out

Normally I get my golf balls from www.golfballbusters.com.au.  I have been using the Bridgestone E6 which I like, but not so much around the greens.  I am looking to try the Callaway HX Diablo Tour, cant get them used in mint grade, but can get new for $29.99 from Drummond Golf etc which is not a bad price.

you want soft ... checkout the Wilson Staff Elite 50 - it's marketed to be the softest of the soft & seems plenty long.     Budget Golf is blowing them out for $11.99 ($20/dozen usually).     I liked the first dozen I bought & just ordered 3 more ...

Hi -

The market has a lot of softer compression balls, some of which have been mentioned above and are in the $18-25 range, that feel good off irons or wedges on full shots, and the putter -- BUT they do not spin well or check up on partial wedge shots (finesse type shots).

If you want check and spin on partials, I think you need a urethane covered ball to go with that softer compression. If you have a swing below 100 mph for the driver, then you can limit the range even more.

These balls include the Bridgestone RXS (more finesse spin) and RX (longer but slightly less finesse spin), and the new Callaway HEX Chrome. I have played the Bridgestone e5 - and it is not a softer compression ball but it does have a urethane cover - I've found it does not spin as well as the RXS on finesse shots - but it did stop in its tracks with a Mizuno  MP T11 Wedge (and that was impressive). Apparently, there is a difference between wedges. But the e5 will feel firmer than the RXS or RX. I've read reviews on the HEX Chrome and they are impressive for the moderate swing speed player. The RXS, RX and HEX Chrome street price around $36. The e5 around $26.

Hi Clarky,

Forgot to mention, alot of people just buy a sleeve of different types of ball and try them out on course. Could be a good option for you.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
