I really just started gold October 2011. I got my sons old set of King Snake Oversized and he got some new Mizunos.

I'm shooting about 93 now. When I drop 10 more strokes, I am thinking abut getting some new irons. As game improvement irons now days are much bigger than my King Snakes I wonder if My next set should be more like a set of blades since King Snakes are not that big.

Any opinions on that ?

Happy Golfing!

If you're committed to the game, by all means invest in a good set of clubs. Not that there's anything wrong with the set you got from your son, but get fitted by a pro. And take his advice on what type of clubs would be good for you. You used the word 'blades' - did you mean that as a slang term for clubs, or do you mean forged blade irons?

Because if you mean forged blades, not yet. That's a good player's club. I don't mean that as a dis to your skill level. I just mean it as, get something more forgiving. Cuz blades are great if you are consistently hitting the sweet spot...but the mis-hits aren't pretty. I'm a single-digit & have been for over thirty years & I play Pings - clubs that are forgiving on mis-hits. I don't hit it well enough to be rocking a set of forged Mizunos.

Unfortunately it doesn't make sense.

The problem with the internet is that every beginning golfer thinks that they need

A: forged clubs

B: blades

No golfer needs either.

You want clubs that feel right to you.

A:They may well be forged (although the fact that they are forged has NOTHING to do with feel)

B: It is most unlikely that they will be blades.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Yes. That is what I meant made sense ... that  ,as Zipazoid suggested,  I would likely benefit from a forgiving set of irons at this point more than a set of blades.

I was just surprised to see in the stores how many of today's game improvement irons are a lot bigger than my old King Snakes.

When I get my handicap down some more, I am definitely headed to a Pro Fitter ... I know right where one is !

Thanks for your advise !

I found a Titleist forged 6i in the used bin at my local pro shop for $5. I hit it pretty well, but I'm not sure I'm ready for a full set of forged blades. I know I'm not the best golfer yet, but I do feel like I swing and hit them better, though. My biggest obstacle is money; can anyone recommend a more inexpensive route to fair quality blade irons? Whether it be used, or new.

Cleveland CG 16 Black Pearl Irons, you'll thank me later. Not totally a game improvement iron and definitely not a blade, perfect for where you are at right now.

You dont exactly need a forged blade but I would certainly look at more of a player's cavity back because its more of a compromise between a GI cavity and a blade.  Im certainly an advocate of forged irons but if you are shooting around 93 you certainly dont want blades.

If you end up looking at a set of Mizunos like your kid got, you cant go wrong with MX-23s, MX-25s, MX-200s, MX-300s, JPX-800s or JPX-800 Pros.  All are great irons that would serve you well.

Whats in my :sunmountain: C-130 cart bag?

Woods: :mizuno: JPX 850 9.5*, :mizuno: JPX 850 15*, :mizuno: JPX-850 19*, :mizuno: JPX Fli-Hi #4, :mizuno: JPX 800 Pro 5-PW, :mizuno: MP T-4 50-06, 54-09 58-10, :cleveland: Smart Square Blade and :bridgestone: B330-S

Went by Dick's Sporting Goods tonight to check on the Clevelands and Mizunos. They had the CG 16 Black Pearl on display and they did look good. They are a tad longer than other clubs  - which I like. They did not have any Mizunos on display but can order them. For some reason most DSG  stores don't carry Mizuno or Titleist Iron sets but the PGA Superstore and GolfSmith in North Atlanta do. I definitely want to check them out - probably the JPX-800s.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
