I was playing around 9 and decided it was time to have some new irons, these for the first few games dropped me into the 80s. I then decided to change my offset driver to a R11. I spent alot of time on the driving range and had to change my swing to help me hit this straight. Since then i have gotten alot worse, not able to hit my irons by grounding them or topping the ball. My last 3 or 4 games have been in the high 90s low 100s and this seams to have happened since the driver change. Anyone got any surgestions?

The best thing to do is post a video of you hitting a golf ball.  That way, you'll get some direct and immediate help.  If you go over to the instruction and playing tips section, you'll see a bunch of member videos and the help they received.  There's some great stuff there.

Same thing happened to my bro - he switched drivers & game went in the tank.     He just plays on the course & doesn't work at it on the range - so my advice as someone else said ... time to go back to the woodshed & work it out.

Maybe the new driver is longer than the old. Therefore some subtle swing changes occur, both physically and mentally. You know the new driver should make the ball go further so you 'help' it along, thereby wrecking your natural swing. First thing is to measure then, if need be, choke down till feeling better. But the truth remains, YOU must work it out in the dirt.

OK, I'm not the best to give advice, but I had something similar going on, and an old pro helped me out and it sounds like the same situation.

I was hitting my irons pretty good, but couldn't hit my driver very well, so I went to the range with the old Pro and he straightened me right out, but I had a lot of range balls hit with just the driver.  Went back to the course and was striping the driver, but hitting well behind the ball or topping my irons that I typically hit pretty well for my handicap.

It was all in my setup.  Because I had changed the way I address the ball with the driver, I was concentrating on that a lot on the range and then had applied those same changes without realizing it to my irons which had me all screwed up.

Good post above by Bullitt.  Similar thing happened when I bought my new driver.  I was hitting a lot of balls with my driver, which ended up screwing my iron game for a few rounds.  Basically I was out on the range swinging out of my shoes trying to carry the ball 320, ball after ball, which was throwing my timing and tempo off with the irons.

After a few rounds, I settled in with the new driver, got my tempo back, and it was fine.

Id say its time to get back to range and hit all of your clubs equally. All my friends that just started golfing always want to hit their driver 80% of the time. Ill hit 5-10 with each club or 10-15 with every other club (driver, 3 hybrid, 5 iron, 7 and so on. If theres a club I know I need more work with ill hit extra balls with that one. But I never go and just hit 1 or 2 clubs I make sure I hit a good amount of my clubs. When i used to just hit 1-2 clubs it would mess the rest of my game up for a round, but thats me.

This would be my first thought on why you are struggling, you may have carried some of those swing changes to your irons.

I have a different problem . My game gone bad since I started gym . The weight training on my shoulder , arms and chest really causing my swing and tempo . My goal to go to gym is to lost weight , improve endurance , flexibility and gain a little more strength . Anyone has the similar experience ?

    • Day 22 - 2026-01-11 More mirror work. Back outdoors tomorrow.
    • Day 11, 1/11/26.  Today was putting, along about 6' of carpet, with coins on the ground to keep me cognizant of what I'm doing.  I think this is the at-home drill from LSW. (Ugh, missed two of the last four days -- 1/10 and 1/8)
    • Day 9: 2026.01.11 Hit some balls at the range, concentrating on weight distribution at address, got some on film.
    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
