Okay so currently, i have a 5 wood (18*) and then i have a 4 iron (24*). Should i get a 21* 4 iron hybrid, or a 3 iron hybrid (18*) The guy at carls said 18, but i was a little confused as to why i would buy a hybrid with the same loft as my fairway wood.

What's the distance gap between your 5-wood and 4-iron?  Factor in carry and roll--you should know both numbers for both clubs.  If it's significant, you may want to get a hybrid in between.  If not, then it doesn't really matter.

It's so much more than loft.  Do you want to hit it higher?  Lower?  This is mostly about CoG and shaft.  Do you want to promote a draw?  Hybrids do this very well.

If distance is the primary concern, then you just need to take all your clubs down to a pro shop and hit them on the launch monitor.  See how far the ball goes.  Hit a few hybrids and see which one fills the gap.

My 5 wood goes about 230-235, and 4 iron is just about 200. So yeah i'd say 30 yards is pretty significant! Its tough when I'm at like 210 and I have to choke up on my 5 wood and try not to hit it as hard. So i was thinking a 4 hybrid (21*) would be the way to go? Cause my 4 iron is 24*. I would like it to have a higher trajectory, also. Thanks for the help!

You can get your 4 iron bent a little to get it to around a 3.5 iron ... maybe 2 degrees strong.  That is what a lot of pros do to fit their gaps.  If you have not gotten fitted then this is your opportunity to also check your lie angle on your clubs.  With a proper fitting you can taylor your distances to how you like them.  I don't carry a 5 wood, but my R11 @ 3 rescue is around 230 yards while my iron 4 iron on my Mizuno MP63 was around 195 yards.  When I checked the loft of my iron it was 1 degree weak, so I set it at two degrees strong and now my 4 iron is about 210 yards.

You really can't tell what an iron loft is by the manufacturer label, for example I checked my brothers Taylormade CGB Max irons and they were all 5 degrees strong!  When you consider that 4 degrees is the average gap between clubs, that meant that his 4 iron was actually a 1 degree strong 3 iron!

So get fitted and make sure there is the correct spacing between your clubs.  Also getting fit for lie is the best thing you can do for your golf game, the tiny sweet spot on your club suddenly becomes huge!

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
