Guys you have to try the Maltby MMB!

I like to tinker around with stuff and decided to see what building a golf club would be like.  After a lot of reading and since I am an avid blade player, I decided to build a set from a golf pak from Golfworks.  I really liked the looks of the Maltby MMB and decided to go for them.  The pak came with FST 115 Pro shafts and those are nice because you can be very flexible in which flex you want to use.  I first decided to make an 8 iron and 6 iron for my brother's kid (12 year old) and cut the tips one club higher using the chart on the FST site.  So I figured the flex would be between A flex and Regular flex.  We took them out on the range yesterday and man those things were sweet.  Now I am a Mizuno man and have 6 sets of forged Mizuno's and currently play MP63's, but those irons really felt even more buttery than the Mizunos.  Not only that, they were amazingly easy to hit and my brother's kid was peppering the flag on the range with beautiful high straight shots.  He plays with R11 CB irons and was hitting with both 8 irons of both clubs and was consistently hitting better shots with the Malby irons.  What is amazing is that these blades are so damn forgiving, even on mishits the results were just as good or better than a mishit on a CB.  We had a ton of people on the range begging to hit shots with the irons and they all were amazed that they could hit so well with a blade.  I guess it could be that the shafts have something to do with the easy hitting clubs (little less than regular), but I also had no problem hitting straight shots with them even though I play with S300 or sometimes X100 shafts.

If you haven't tried to build a club, give it a try.  Go to Golfworks and buy the components to build one club (say 8 iron or 6 iron).  I don't think it would cost more than $50 to build one.  I highly recommend the MMB from Maltby especially if you like forged blades.  Even if you don't play blades give them a try, you will be surprised at how easy it is to hit these, and a well hit blade is always more accurate than a well hit CB.  I think that Golfworks can also assemble the club for you for a minimal charge, so if you don't have a workshop that might be a better option.

I use a couple of his wedges, they are pretty decent.  I prefer the looks of the previous generation of the MMB though.  I buy quite a bit of stuff from GW, the newest catalog and price list actually just came in today!

I was actually surprised at how easy it was to make a club.  I had bought a spine finder and so spined every club I made.  The real PIA was installing the ferrules as that was tight as hell!  I finally read somewhere that you just put them in hot water before and they go right in ... wish I had read that before getting a nice cut on my finger trying to cut out the ferrule and replace it!   But really they feel smooth and buttery just like Mizunos, and I dare say I might be replacing my MP63's with the MMB's.  They really are very forgiving for a blade and even mishits are not punished too much.  It could also be a combination of spining and the FST Pro 115 shafts that is giving such smooth results.  I will make a couple more clubs in X100 and S300 and FST 115 Pro Stiff to see how that compares with my MP 63 and MP67.  I got a couple of extra heads with the same loft so I can compare.  The lofts on the irons were all perfect and so I bent them 1.5 degrees strong to match the kids older clubs (TM r11).
