In spite of all the slick advertising, and golf is full of it,  in order to hit the ball well you have to have some skill.

Fitted xyz's with new grips don't really help most people.  Some club designs are more forgiving than others.  They accommodate mishits better.  Club technology went through an important evolution in the 1980s and 1990s when  cavity back irons, and perimeter weighted clubs became common and available to everyone.  Since then there has been plenty of innovation, but nothing earth shaking like the concepts listed above.

Club technology in say the 1960s allowed for some great shots to be made and plenty of distance by professionals.  The penalty for missing the small sweet spot was severe.  When I was young and strong I had a nice set of persimmon Walter Haigen woods.  It was not that hard to hit past the 275 yard marker to the back fence at most driving ranges.  A poorly struck shot might only go 130-160 yards.  Irons had a lot more loft and didn't go as far, so we just used more club. Golf ball technology is still evolving.

Golf is like many sports in that equipment commands a lot of attention.  Too much attention, when practising a repeatable swing that works under pressure is really the goal.

Agree, it's more likely the swing. The OP possibly adapted his swing to his old clubs.

I was told that when you go with longer shafts then you are used to then your impact will be a closer to the hosel.  I just switched to 1/2 inch longer shafts in the last 2 weeks and the same thing happened to me.  Mostly the impact off the hosel.  But after about 300 range balls and 3 rounds it feels perfect.  Stick with it you will be fine

I think that could be because you are still standing the same distance from the ball. Maybe back off a half inch and see what happens. You need room for the club to swing in.

Well, maybe not you, but the OP!

It would have to just be look, feel, "in your mind" . .and maybe some to do with the longer shafts.  I went from some Callaway Big Bertha's that I had for 4 years to Mizuno Mp-53's.  Very different looking and sounding clubs.  It took several hundred swings with the mp53's before they started to feel like "my irons" and not "new irons".

I'd say take the new irons to the range and hit a large bucket.  Do this 2-3 times over the course of a week or 2.  If they still don't feel good - check to see if they're fit right for you. They could be off in some way . .like the lies off or something.

I can pretty much adjust to a variety of clubs, though - I have some Pings that are 2 degrees upright with a 1/2 longer shaft and my Mizunos are std lie and length.  I can go between them with some adjustment - mostly mental or maybe just my set-up . .not adjusting my swing or anything.

Changing irons can be hard. I currently use MP-59s and cannot hit an offset GI club anymore. But the MP-59 shafts are a little too stiff for me (Aerotech Steelfiber R staffs) which play on the stiff side. So I now have a choice of having the MP-59s sent in for a re-shaft or I may get the MP-25s with the shaft of my choice. I am leaning towards the 25s. Hopefully they will be close and my initial break in period will not be too long. Our demo day is in a week or two and I will hit as many irons as I can.

While this is more of a guess, I'm thinking that your Cobra knockoffs had more offset than the Callaways.  I'm sure there is some flaw in your swing, that is keeping you from getting square, either path or placement.  But everyone has a flaw in his/her swing.  You probably just have to figure out the correct ball placement and setup for your swing.

Might have to move away slightly or move the ball up in your stance.  As others have said, get your 7i dialed in and then go from there.  I think you will be fine.

Believe it or not, there was a time many years ago when an ancient people roamed the earth and they actually purchased golf clubs without hitting them and without millions of dollars in technology to assist them if getting that perfect set.  People adjusted to the clubs... sometimes good and sometimes not so good.  I don't want to go back to those days, but I am more inclined to agree with ppine is that we all have crappy swings to some degree and we just have to figure out how to get what we can out of a decent set of clubs.
