Are you sure?  If he was in standing water or plugged, he would drop from the spot his ball ended up, right?  He wouldn't have the option to go clear back to where he played his last shot from (and then not count the prior stroke).

Dear oh dear.

He most certainly was NOT. You don't get to replay the shot. The guy cheated.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Side note:  How often are you able to hit that island green??

I've done it twice out of a whole lot of tries.  I've hit it a decent amount, but its hard to make it stop.  The front is actually about 241.  Its a neat hole. Layup area is way right, so the hole plays about 330 if you hit right into the fairway (scrub short of the fairway).  Also, some swamp trees in front between green and tee box, so you have to hit it somewhat high.

From the USGA Handicap Manual:

5-1a. Scores To Post

To post a 9-hole score, the player must play 7 to 12 holes, and at least 7 holes must be played in accordance with the principle of the Rules of Golf.  To post an 18-hole score, the player must play at least 13 holes in accordance with the principles of the Rules of Golf. (See Decisions 5-1a/3 through 5-1a/5.)

Just to clarify what the above in red means, assuming you have played 7-12 holes correctly (by the rules)  for those holes you did not, give yourself par plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to on those holes.  A common example of this is what to put down for a hole that you took a "mulligan".

From the Handicap Manual:

4-2. Holes Not Played or Not Played Under The Principles of The Rules of Golf

If a player does not play a hole or plays it other than under the principles of the Rules of Golf (except for preferred lies ), the score recorded for that hole for handicap purposes must be par plus any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on that hole. This hole score, when recorded, should be preceded by an "X."

Example: A player with a Course Handicap of 10 receives a handicap stroke on the first 10 allocated handicap-stroke holes. If the player does not play the sixth allocated handicap-stroke hole, which is a par 4, because of construction on the green, the player must record a score of par plus one for handicap purposes, or X-5. (See Decision 4-2/1 and Section 5-2b .)

I'd be cool with it...............You won't have to worry about this guy in club events because he probably can't play to his HC.  Vanity HC players don't hurt a thing.......

Be wary of the sandbaggers...............................

I say the opposite....... "DO PLAY HIM FOR MONEY!!!"

Of course if playing for money....he'd have to play by the rules during that round and try to play to his vanity HC.

Well done, sounds quite difficult.  So, is that it in your avatar?  Looks like a sweet hole.

Sorry, must have read that wrong, I thought the guy did take a drop not play the shot over again.

No, you misunderstand.  You don't get to pick and choose 13 holes.  ALL holes played in accordance with the rules are counted.  In the case at hand only the hole where the guy replayed a shot would be ignored, since it wasn't played under the Rules of Golf, and replaced with the most likely score.

Thanks for that clarification.  This is what I meant by most likely score, but you have stated it far more precisely.  I knew that was in there somewhere but I had a little trouble finding it.

But then again, what the hell do I know?
