How much distance could I be losing with my balloon driver and what rpm does a ball start ballooning.

Hello I have a tiny bit of a driver fitting problem and I am considering if the difference in a fitted driver would be worth the money.  I currently have an r7 quad Ht 10.5 with an xstiff NVS shaft 55 gram which is a light soft tip shaft which I don't mind the feel off.  The problem is my ball starts ballooning on occasion (all the time with a pro v1)and I get no roll even backspin sometimes(in the wind it goes nowhere).  My swing and launch are fine it is purely a fitting problem.  My question is how much distance is this likely losing me or how much would a fitted driver benefit me?   My swing speed is at least 100 mph I would hit it on average easily 250. I would say my rpm is about 5000.

I did demo the 910d2 9.5 with a rip stiff 9.5 and it felt unbelievable.  It was definitely a flatter flight than my driver, it wasn't ballooning as expected but I was still expecting it to go a bit lower or longer especially being a 9.5 and I was still getting little roll. So it is pretty close to what I would expect to be optimal so id say it would be at 3500 rpm.  I couldn't tell if I gained any distance with it because i wasn't hitting them side by side but it definitely felt hotter off the face and on one hole I hit it 20 yards further twice than I ever have with my driver yet on one slight incline hole about the same as a good drive with my other driver.  My question is this would it be possible that I am losing about 20 - 30 yards with my r7 quad and a fitted driver would gain this?I really want to play with pro v1s but I cant simply because it balloons so much of my driver so it would be good to get fitted a lone for that.

Obviously you could say to go to a trackman but then I have to book to use it and talk to the sales guys and its really awkward and feel pressured into buying it there when I dont have the money yet and just want to see out of curiosity and a new 912 should be out this winter.

Ballooning doesn't occur at a specific RPM, it depends on the dimple pattern, the launch angle, and the ball speed. Into the wind it becomes more pronounced, but essentially the higher the ball speed and the launch angle the less spin you want. At a 100mph swing, 250 yards isn't bad and the spin is too high but it shouldn't be costing you more than 10-20 yards in the end. Driving the ball 260-270 in neutral conditions is about the best you could do with 100mph swing speed, including roll.

Ok thanks thats a nice resource.  Yea I thought about the same.  I suppose I should really get some data and test clubs to get the right answer and swing stats.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
