All of the high schools in my town have turf football fields, and allow the public to use them whenever they are not already being used by the district.  I figure that a football field would be a great place to track my distances for the 3/4 wedge idea.  My only real concern is I'm not sure how hitting off field turf could artificially inflate or deflate my distances.  Thoughts?

Depends on how hard the turf is.  Why can't you do that at the driving range?  Get a range finder; it's a good investment, especially if you're wanting to be that precise about your yardages.

It seems to me like it would be both easier and cheaper to do this on a field rather than the range.  It doesn't help that the range I usually go to is undergoing a massive renovation.  The field you hit to is all dirt right now, and it makes it very difficult to see your ball once it's close to the ground.

I agree, it always amazes me that I can send a sand wedge across an entire NFL field. I think it's just the fun of it, more than a range. But wouldn't you attract some attention, and people come over and watch you, and kids ask stupid questions, and toddlers in the landing zone?

The fields are usually only used by people playing football or soccer.  I figure that I could go earlier in the day when no one would be out using the field.

Not sure what your wedge would do to the field turf.  In my town, they would go crazy if they saw me try it.

Not a crazy idea at all. I did this a bunch a couple of winters ago. Not with artificial turf but in a large baseball complex. I used a matt but was able to hit hundreds of balls. I would hit 20-30 balls with a 1/2 3/4 52 56 and 60 degree and then shoot my yardages back to my bag within the average grouping of balls. This allowed my to make a nice chart of 9 different distances with the three clubs. My stock yardage I now try to get to is 75 yards which is a 3/4 56 which gives me lots of spin.
