I know that you said that you can't really get to demo days/club fittings and that it usually is really hard for you to even get into one of the hitting bays on the weekends, but if it was me, and I was about to drop a good amount of money on one club, I'd make the effort to get fitted.  It may be harder to do so, but will well be worth the money.

I don't swing that hard, 110mph or so for me.  The one time I did a driver fitting, my best numbers came in with an Xstiff.  People will steer you away from Xstiff because they are so accustomed to golfers "reaching" to a shaft that is too stiff for them.  You legitimately need an Xstiff at that speed.  You'll see quite a bit less spin, meaning more distance.  If you're "only" seeing 275 with a 115-120mph swing, on a well struck ball, you have fitting issues.

I will admit that I thought that "internet" chatter of 120+mph swing speeds was BS, but in the last week alone I've seen two guys right at 120mph on the monitor at the local big box store(real monitor, not a simulator).   Pretty impressive stuff, sounded like a cannon when they hit the ball, both had nice balanced swings.

I am hoping to get to one on the 11th, a titleist one. They are all 1.5 to 2 hours away on my work days is the problem.

1) +-120 swing speed definitely = X stiff

2) you describe your drives as rising. This usually means way too much back spin, probably brought about by descending angle of attack. Not good with a driver. get on a monitor and make sure that you are hitting your driver at or after the apex (on the upswing by a couple of degrees)

3) new drivers with the weight redistributed to move the MOI rearward will help reduce ball spin.

4) 295 yds with a +-120 mph swing speed tells me that you are not hitting efficiently, ie your smash factor stats will be low. This basically means that a lot of the energy is going into a glancing blow, ie descending or excessive draw or cut angles.

I doubt that my on course swing is 120, but more of a over swing at the launch monitor at that time. I would guess it is 110-115 max but I hope to find out soon

I hate how people put up bogus numbers of swing speeds in the 120's and driver distances in the 290-300 range. my top for a average swing was like 107 and that was at the end of golfing everyday for 2 months for school and after a major gain in distance from 210 average up to 260 average topping out at 275 on a perfect strike with little wind. It could be false info from the measuring devices but I know some has to be just blatant lies.

There are a lot of bogus stats on the net. A lot are unintentional. But there are also a people that can smash the crap out of a golf ball and they are likely to be posting here.  If there are only 500 people in the US with 130mph swing speeds, it would be surprising to see 50 of them on a golf board talking about swing speed.

Do what I do: if someone says something annoying, look at their post count. If they joined the forum just to say it, block them and don't bother responding.

FYI I believe 120mph is within the realm of possibility for more people than most would expect. I'm capable of it myself though it does me little good atm.

I didn't notice the post number but did notice the "highschoolgolf" name so I figured it was a waste of time explaining too extensively.

I didn't mean to cut anyone down in particular I was just looking at a ton of different posts and I doubt that 85 percent of people on this website can swing that fast. Im not saying you cant just that I doubt everyone can

So the plan was to get fitted today but Titleist cancelled the fitting... The one day I could get away. Stupid rain.

Just regarding S vs. X shafts:  I bought a new driver (Titleist) a few months ago at a big chain after being fitted on their machine.  No idea what type of monitor/simulator it was, nor can I say if I was swinging particularly hard or not (if I am nothing else, I am definitely inconsistent) but I came in right at 105-ish on average.  They put me in a Stiff shaft.  When I hit it solidly and straight, its right around 275-280.  Just a couple of weeks ago I was fitted into a new Callaway driver (without launch monitor or simulator - just expert eyes on the driving range)  This time I was fitted with an X stiff shaft.  I hit them side by side at the range for the first time yesterday and there was no noticeable difference between the 2 distance wise.  Incidentally, the X stiff was much more accurate than the S, but that could certainly be attributed to something other than the shaft stiffness.  They also have slightly different lofts, different lie angles, and different shafts as well.

My point is simply that even at (or slightly below) the recommended limit for X stiff shafts it looks like a winner for me.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Well the fitting showed that I should use the project x 7C3 Stiff shaft. I used a few of the extra stiff shafts and they would look awesome but carry much less with similar launch angles. I can't help but think that my inconsistency may not help. I also made some swing changes there, advised by the pro. It was hard to get comfortable with the new changes but I agreed with what he was saying so I went with it. That being said I hit a few really nice contact and launch angle shots with the new changes but I may wait out the purchase of the shaft a week or three until I get comfortable. Ping and Cleveland will be in town actually next week (yay!) so I will try to get myself sorted out before I lay out the bread for the new driver.

Sadly I have a long history of hitting beautiful and smashed looking drives except to get to the ball and it is only 250-260 yards out.

The Ping i20 is a wonderful feeling driver, make sure you give that a hit when Ping comes to town.

Unfortunately the ping rep won't be there but tm instead. :(

Perfect smash factor of 1.50 - club head speed would be 108 mph (162mph ball speed / 1.50)

Not too good smash factor of 1.45 - club head speed would be 112 mph  (162/1.45)

My guess is that your actual club head is somewhere between the 2 numbers above, probably closer to the 112.

    • Day 21 - Good session with driver and 6i. Hitting real golf balls is quite a bit different from the foam balls, still getting used to that change.
    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
    • Day 4: 3/26/25 Par4Success workout followed by putting through 50 mm gates.
    • Day 249: did a stack putting session and then worked on 5 foot putts for a bit.
