I always thought pros used 9.5 degrees at MOST... mostly less, but reading the review for the new Callaway RAZR X Black Driver got me thinking. The review said that the 8.5 and the 9.5 actually had open faces, 10.5 was completely square, and anything above actually had a closed face.

The open and closed faces were only 1 degree off of square, but either way that would bother me, lol let alone a Tour pro. Just knowing that, without having a club in my hands, it bugs me... I'm sure professionals could/would get theirs custom made to not have the offset but still... got me wondering. Do any pros happen to use a 10.5 degree?

A lot of drivers that tour players play are set up to be open at address...

Dustin Johnson - and dozens of others.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Yes. A lot of it comes down to angle of attack if I understand correctly.

offset =/= closed or open.

why would it surprise you that some pros set up with the face open?

I just think that, anyone really, but pros especially would want a perfectly square face to work with, since accuracy is so important. I see an open or closed face potentially affecting your margin for error in a negative way is all... even if it's just a degree off.

have you ever seen pros set up with the ball out towards the toe?  some do.

also, many pros set up with an open face so they can hit a draw that starts out to the right.

Come to think of it, I have noticed how they start the ball right and draw it back left... a lot of pros do it. I just didn't think it had anything to do with a club face that was actually open.

    • Day 1: 2/26/2025: So, I'm starting over on this again.  My son brought home the mother of all flu bugs from school. It raged though our house and knocked me on my butt for about 3 days.  Now, that I think I'm clear of the death plague my son gave me. I was able to rise early this morning and get some nice mirror work in. I felt stiff like a board for the first few swings, but loosened up and was able to get at least 20 minutes of first robotic slow swings and then gradually more fluid swings.  My focus was on the timing and fluidity of my priority pieces.
    • I use a MagSafe connector on my tripod. Occasionally I use those clips.
    • Working on some swing videos. What are you guys having the best luck with as far as devices used to record the swing?  I have a tripod with a magnet that I stick my phone on but it is somewhat of a pain because I have to remove the cover on my phone and when I pull it off the magnet the tripod head changes and moves position. I was thinking something more like an ipad maybe. On a different style tripod and maybe even set it up to mirror to a tv.
