Tee box help

Hey guys im new to golf. Last year i recieved a reg flex 909 dcomp and i am just struggling with it.  I was wondering should i try something like a 3 or 4 wood or even a 2 hybrid for the tee box. Thanks for any advice and what would u get.

Absolutely.

Until your swing is grooved in, you will benefit from hitting clubs from the tee-box that actually help you more often than they hurt you.

Most guys don't want to do that as it is an ego thing and we enjoy hitting things with big or bigger things.

A few years ago, I decided to use a 3 wood off the tee - played my best golf - and then started to learn more about the game.

Using a 3W off the tee has two benefits: It's easier to get the shot airborne in your early days as your swing shapes up, and you get better benefits from 3W practice time (you use it off the tee and off the fairway, and get more practice reps with the club).

Which should i get 3 4 5 wood or a 2 hybrid? Also should i just sell my 909 dcomp then?

I use a 3 wood alot on holes with doglegs that don't appreciate my jack nicklaus-esque power fade but I just read something in golf digest about 4 woods being better than 3 woods especially off the tee do to the fact they cause more roll... but your best bet is most likely to go get fitted and find a club that you like and can hit without much turn in its ballflight.

Oh yeah and if you are as new to the game as you say, you will DEFINITELY want to get a 3 wood designed for more inexperienced players or a 4 or 5 wood which will make it easier for you to get the ball off the ground.  And do you know if your 909 comp is more of a tour model? because if it is, then that might be part of your problem since you're hitting a club designed to be less forgiving... but it can be done... my first driver was a Callaway 460 x tour model that I learned to hit 250+ every time... until I snapped the head off on the range.

On doglegs, I shoot the distance to the rough if I would blow the ball straight through the dogleg.  Then I select a club that will land me short of that in case it happens.

That's not a bad idea, but I play from the members tees at my home course and there's only one dogleg you can drive through completely.

Lately I've been playing some courses with some sharp doglegs.  Definite risk reward holes, where the reward doesn't seem worth the risk.  Driver and sometimes 3 wood bring trouble into play if I blow the ball straight through the dogleg.  I've been really liking my 3H off the tee on these holes.

The 909 isn't a tour model and I'm really not worried about dog legs I would tee off with an iron if the dl is early on the hole. So u guys say a 4 would and 2h setup would b ideal?

I would highly recommend looking into a hybrid.  I like them off the tee better than higher lofted fairway woods.

.... well depends how well you hit that hybrid... Just pick a club you hit straight but a hybrid would be good because of the shorter shaft, i.e. a lot easier to control.

I just got a 2hybrid recently and love it but for about 6 months when learning I just always used a 3 wood off the tee. The smaller head puts more emphasis on contact instead of having this big head that makes me feel like I should go after it with the driver. I will still tee off with my 3w all the time. Dead straight par 5 last week I tee off with my 3 wood and pass both my buddies drives. no shame

Bubs - here is my two cents... To echo what the others have mentioned... Pick a club you hit well off the tee. You're better off being 180-200 in the fairway than 250 and in the woods or lake. If you hit a 3 wood better than a hybrid, or vice versa, go with that club. I have a friend I play with on occassion who tees off with a 4hybrid. He doesn't even carry a wood in his bag because he hits the fairway a very low percentage of the time with them. He plays percentage golf... He'll only take a shot if he knows he can pull it off 80% of the time or better. He's just under a bogey golfer. That being said... One other thing you might want to consider is a stiffer shaft on your woods. You may not hit it as far (depending on your swing speed), but it could provide you with some better control. And of course... Some good quality lessons could really pay off, if you have the motivation to work at it a bit. Good luck!

Thanks a ton guys.  Do you think I should sell my 909 dcomp r flex then buy something with a stiff shaft in the new few years and focus on buying a 3w and a 2H??  Cause Im going to make the move and go with the smaller club head.

that depends on you. Are you young and beleive you are gonna get your swing speed up. I beleive the D comp is a pretty good driver and If it was a matter of space you might as well hold on to it and just swith shafts later on if thats what you decide. Meanwhile you can swing it at the range and work on it. If its a matter of money you could sell that d comp and buy yourself at least one or the other 3 wood or hybrid. so unless you need the money you might as well hold on to it.
