it's a kind of long story...

my friend and I were out golfing the other afternoon wehn we had a strange thing happen. We were throwing a ball back and forth waiting for the people in front of us to finish up. we hear fore, and half a second later we hear a ball land no more than 5 ft away from where my friend is standing. i then walk over to where a tree is between my tee and the fairway where the guy is playing. yet a gain we hear fore, and a ball comes within six inches of my head.

we then proceed to tee off on the par 3 we were playing, and when we were putting we hear the guy ask if we had seen his ball, we say that we heard one ball but do not know where the other one went that went by my head because we were focused on teeing off. he then yells to ask again, we think he didnt hear us so we yell again the same thing. he then proceeds to say that we stole his ball, and that we should just give it up or else he will walk over to us and go through our bags.

we keep yelling we dont have it, but he still walks all the way down and onto the next hole where we are teeing off and proceeds to go through our bags looking for his ball. guess what, he didnt find his ball, yet he still accused us of taking his ball and that at this early time it is good to develop good habbits and not take people's balls, (even though it was one ball that he lost). luckily my friend was the gm's dad and we reported him only too find out he was the club champion...

anyone else have crazy people like this on their golf course

I don't know what is worse, almost getting hit on a box, or the club champion that obviously has an approach shot deficiency. The second he tried to go through my bag we would have had a serious problem. I'de like to play that guy for the championship!! Instead my course is home to Gill Morgan, Bob Tway, and about 10 other touring pro's.

If a guy had gone through my golf bag there would have been real problems. You're right, he was crazy.

Yeah, if he would've checked my bag we would've had issues. Unless he had evidence, he shouldn't of accused you of taking his ball.

There was this one time where I hit my tee shot into another fairway. While I was waiting for my partner to hit his second shot, I saw the group hitting from the opposite tee boxes heading towards my ball; since their shots were in that area. A lady in the group bends down and analyzes "A" ball and then proceeds to put in her pocket. So I head over to them and asked if they've seen a Titliest 1. Her partner says "hey, what was that ball you found?" She just brushes her off and says "no, we haven't seen it." Oh well...I guess that's another reason for me to keep the ball in right fairway.

When I hit an errant shot like that where I see casual golfers in the area, I immediately head for the spot where it landed. I make sure they know I'm headed their way, and most of the time that solves the problem.

In response to the original post, that guy wouldn't be going through MY bag. I'm 6'2" and 240, and although I'm a peaceable type, I can put on a face that makes a bully like that back down.... especially if I have my Cleveland sand wedge in my hand. BTW, that is NOT the behavior of a champion... it's the act of a total jerk who thinks he's got right to do whatever he wants because he plays golf well... I've met the type before . Not much you can do but stand up for yourself, at least to a point short of getting physical (it's not worth breaking your hand against the guy's face and being on the DL the rest of the season ). And if the situation does get nasty, take your bag and head for the clubhouse. I'd not only report the jerk, but I'd demand that the problem be addressed, and I'd demand compensation from the course for being forced to deal with something like that. If you don't stick up for yourself, nobody else will.

yea seriously you should have fought that *******, you can't just demand to search through someones bad because you think you lost your ball. You (the club champ ahole) hit a bad shot, get over it and find you damn ball dont blame the guy you almost just killed. thats what i hate about golf, it attracts so many f*****.....

I applaud you for keeping your cool. I'm a peaceful, fun-loving guy but I would have lost my f'ing mind if somebody tried to go thru my bag!!!! That's just something you don't do no matter who you are.

I would have choked a ho. Seriously I am not the fighting type but if someone wants to go through my bag I would have went postal on his ass. Thats not right at all... especially when its your club champion... and if he is shanking the ball like that I feel bad for you... I mean sorry but the quality of players are just not there. You really shouldn't have let him go through your bags though... thats not right at all.

i agree. we had our share of cocky college players that would come home for the summer and play. granted they were good and one or two of them won the club tourney, but that doesnt excuse poor behavior.

Hell if he went through my bag I'd beat his ass.

I actually had a guy hit me in the face with a pw and the result of it was damage to the right side of my face. It was almost like I had Bel Pausy but not from a virus but from the trauma on that side. The "plexus" of nerves where damaged lucky for me they rewired themselves and I have 99% movement back in my face.

Anyway I reported him to the police on my cell phone. Screw the management and the cop actually drove his car on the green and arrested these loser.

Obtw that loser who hit me now has a felony on his record.

I think if you win the club championship, its that one day where you show off your win. Once you win, its overwith, you dont carry it on bragging about it thinking you can do whatever you want. Once that day is over, your a normal golfer like everyone else again. That guy who went through your bag was totally uncalled for. I have a good story

My first year having a membership I was on the fourth fairway and i found a ball on the fairway, i picked it up and put it in my pocket. A guy came by asking for a ball and instead of feeling embarrased from picking it up and then not knowing what to say when i gave it back i told him i didnt have it. He started yelling at me and he kept sayin "I know you have it, I know you have it" finally he gave up and i walked off. We started laughing and the funniest thing, was that he couldnt identify his ball without feeling like an idiot because the picture he drew on it was a penis. Wouldnt that be funny... "hey have you guys seen a ball with a penis on it?"

Dude, you were wrong. You just don't pick up any ball you find, especially when it's on the fairway. It's wrong, and it's terrible golf etiquette. If you can afford membership in a private club, you can afford to buy your own golf balls. Guess I'm just glad you don't play on my course.

Oh obviouslly I know i was wrong. Definatly. I just didnt know what to do after i picked it up so i walked away. I wasnt implying it was the right thing to do.... I was young, like most young kids you love picking up balls and keeping em. You cant tell me youve never accidently or purposely picked up a ball that wasnt yours.

If someone started going through my bag like that I would've probably decked him right then and there. If someone's dumb enough not to take my word for it that I didn't take their ball - I've picked up their balls before by accident but if they claimed it I fessed up and gave it back to them, no harm done - then they dont belong on the course.

Then again, I'm like 6'5'' and almost 300lbs, so I could get away with decking the average guy right on the spot.

Dont know why - but everytime i see somebody picking up my ball and i go up to them and tell them to give it back (i really only do this if i´m 100 % sure that someone picked it up - still it happens quite frequently especially on public courses) - they seem to feel quite uncomfortable with the situation and are not very happy about giving it back - probably not cuz they want to keep the ball so bad, but you caught them doing "something dirty"...

A couple of months ago i played with a buddy on such a public course and took my 2nd shot about 80m in front of the green of a Par 5 - my ball was quite visible on the fairway, when suddenly one of the guys of the flight before us walked back and started playing my ball - we were quite astonished by that. So we drove up to them as they were already putting (it took us some time to realize wtf was just going on) and i asked this guy if he just played my ball - he said nothing obviously pretending to not speak english, finished putting as i asked him again if this is my ball pointing at my ball and slowly starting to get pissed he putted the ball to me and left the green without saying anytihng. After driving back we found out why he played my ball - he must have lost his ball (some crappy ball clearly different to my marked ProV) which was laying in a sprinkler and probably assumed that his ball must have been spit out from earth again going through a branding change too and that my ball has to be his ball obviously....

Same as described above - i havent been in a situation yet where someone just comes up with a Sorry for the mistake and simply gives the ball back...

I don't pick one up unless I'm absolutely certain that it's truly lost, not just misplaced. If you know the course you can generally be sure... if there is even the slightest doubt, I don't touch it. Most balls I find in the rough don't interest me anyway.

If I did pick one up and got caught, I'd at least fess up to it.

    • Rory’s once again in a position to win a major, and The Masters at that, but having BDC breathing down your neck can’t be a good feeling. He has a lot of presence on the course when playing. Fingers crossed that Rory can get revenge for the 2024 US Open and finally collect his career slam.

    • I’m definitely pulling for Rory. I must say I wish BDC hadn’t gone to LIV. I like his YouTube content and just don’t get why he felt he had to go there. It’s obvious he loves the game and the fans, and he’s not getting near the hype when he plays those exhibition matches on LIV.    I’d like to see Rose have a strong finish as well. Most of all though, I wanna see Rory have a solid Sunday.
