I prefer steel shafts only in my irons. Never did like the feel of graphite shafts in my irons.

It also depend on your swing speed. If you have a lower swing speed (SS 90MPH or less). Then graphite shafts might be better for you.

My driver swing speed is 106MPH.

You should go to your local pro shop, golf shop, and get fitted. See what they recomend.

I've played both.  In my opinion, it's a matter of feel, more than anything else.  It's true that graphite shafts can help for those with lower swing speeds (such as myself), but I've found that the light weight causes me to instinctively try to swing harder, resulting in a loss of accuracy.  I prefer the feel of graphite over steel (much softer), but I have better control with lightweight steel shafts.  Right now I play Nippon N.S. 950 (steel) in regular flex in my irons.  These shafts weigh 95 grams, which I believe is about 20-30 grams heavier than a typical graphite iron shaft.

If I were you, I'd head to a golf shop with a simulator.  Hit some of each, and decide what you like better.  Or find a demo 6 iron of a set you're interested in with a graphite shaft on eBay and take it to the range.

Never tried them the extra 100 dollars didn't seem like it was worth it, plus I am not a fan of looking down on them.

I prefer the weight and strength of steel. I know the graphite is extremely strong, possibly more than steel. My old set of X-14s have them and I was always worried I'd hit down on the ball with a short iron too hard and hit a rock or something under ground and break the shaft. It was something that was in the back of my mind constantly and probably affected my game. That and I never liked the "lightness" of them.

I to prefer steel to graphite. Had graphite on my irons before and didn't like the feel of them. Switched to steel a few years ago and never looked back.

My friend had graphite shafts on his irons... I really didn't like them. It seems like they have a bit too much give for my taste.

Agree. Even though I "know" they won't break my subconscious still makes me swing like a pansy with graphite shafted irons. No issues with graphite hybrids though and I hit down with them so...all in the head. Stupid head!

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
