I bought a new Taylormade R7 460 3 months ago and it has developed an intermittent rattle.... every so often, it sounds like there is a small stone in the head, then a few holes later its gone. As would be my luck, it never rattles when I am at the pro shop where I bought it.

Thoughts on the cause?

And more importantly...

Thoughts on my position after 3 months ownership - can it be returned, even if it is not rattling at the time?

The rattle is off-putting to say the least!

Thanks
Mike

It's probably a small piece of the welding inside the head that's broken off -- it's not all that uncommon. If you can get it to rattle while at the shop they can put some "rattle stop" (it's like hot melt glue) in the head and heat it up. Then they'll bang the head on a rag placed on their bench or against a heavy glove and the metal piece will embed itself into the glue. Let cool. Voila! No more rattle.

At least that's how I've seen it done before.

It's probably not anything serious but I'm sure it's annoying when it happens!

I'd just ask for a new one. It's "broken" and well within the warranty period. Glue or anything else will change the weighting (swingweight as well as balance).

Got it replaced with a new 905R... They wouldn't go to a Superquad or a D2

Could be a pebble that's lodging into your hozel when you don't hear it, and budging loose when you do hear it.

After 3 months+, most golf shops won't take a club back.

It maybe worthwhile to remove the grip and check it out that way. Getting a grip professionally replaced is 5-10 dollars max. Golf Pride velvet cord is a good choice.

With the grip removed, you should be able to drop out what has been nagging you. If seems like it maybe part of the shaft or clubhead, I'd contact taylor made or have your golf store send it back for you. Even if your golf store won't accept a return, they should be able to help you get it to taylor made. Of course you're most likely to pay the shipping.

They were going to send to TM but could not guarantee it would be back to me in 3 weeks (and I leave Australia in 3 weeks to move to Dubai)

They therefore did a straight swap for the 905R.

Excellent service from the local pro!

Congrats. Now they have a loyal customer, and for good reason.

But you should have gone with the FT-5!!!

...they don't stock Callaway there. Happy with the 905 - I was between it and the R7 when I bought anyway.

i know im ressurecting this old thread but i had the same problem. i foundout that it is actually the movable weights that sometimes rattle.

yep for me it was the moveable weights - i've had them come a little lose a couple of times (had it a year) - always carry the tool wrench now because if a weight comes out you cannot use the driver again that round (you can't alter the club dynamics during round)

so watch out all you MWT fans! check your weights before you go to your pro/clubmaker/shop - it's the first thing they check.

I recall whenever it happened I checked the weights and it never fixed it. Definitely something was moving inside the head of the club.

Missing the R7 loads - I am hating the 905R! Should have just put up with the rattle!

Old thread - but I thought doing a search is always warranted. A couple weeks ago, the VR Pro is rattling (just got the shaft replaced). Sounds like a bit of flashing..... 1 - tried heating it up (melt the wax and capture whatever is loose). Only temporary, rattle came back. 2 - Dick's offered to send to Nike (still under warranty) - but it'll take 2 weeks. though it'll be free. 3 - Golf Galaxy (Dick's, but golfing) - offered the same, or will fix in house. I went with fix it in house (small hole up in the hosel, spray in some rattle foam) since it would only take "two days" and about 12 bucks. 6 days later - still not fixed - I told them to just send it to Nike now. I had to go over there though. (this one does have a good shop, surprised I wasn't called a couple days ago). So I lost an extra week. Crap. On the plus side, I do like my backup driver (very glad I didn't sell or give it away). Now to wait another couple weeks.

    • Day 45 (27 Dec 25) - played at one of the sisters courses to my home course.  Solid session through the bag….of the 7 pars, 4 were up and down 1 putts (wedges were dialed in) from 6’ or less.  Off the tee - solid, irons were consistent even it a bit under on distances.  Course management was on - stayed the course even with a few offline recovery shots required…
    • Day 453 - 2025-12-27 Two things today for about 48 balls (I like to hit three or six balls at a time before taking a small break to pick them up): Right leg stays flexed a bit, internal rotation on the backswing. Kept my eyes looking at the ball and trusted that the backswing was fine.
    • Day 137 12-27 Worked on wider backswing today and tried to remain flowy. Recorded face on and down the line. Swing is looking better but I mentally felt off today, just frustrated. Tomorrow's a new day!
    • Day 8 - 2025-12-27 45 minutes of short game work at local muni, mostly putting work. Trying to get lots of reps in with consistent quality tempo.
    • I guess I'll stay at -16 for this year's challenge.  I never birdied holes 7, 13 (the 2 hardest holes) in 2025.  Also had a couple Eagle putts on the par 5's, but didn't convert either time.  Looking forward to 2026, though!
