Um.... if your handicap is a legit 31, I am pretty sure that you slice as well.. and very often.

my handicap is slightly lower than the 31 it says (i don't actually have one, just use yahoo estimator) and my short game is atrocious. i don't slice though.

there are these blanket assumptions made based on handicap. not all handicaps are equal and not everyone can be classified in a certain way because of their handicap.

besides if you would have read i wrote that they slice and then don't go looking

I generally go with any mid - high level ball that goes on sale.

Right now I have a bunch of Maxfli U4's and U4x's (on sale at Dicks - $15 per 6). They are really really spinny, so probably not good for someone who puts a lot of sidespin on the ball. They check and back up like nothing else I've played, so I have been learning to really go at the flag from 150 and in using them. They are also very soft and feel awesome off my forged blades. I think I'll get at least another dozen before they go off sale.

I read what you said... you thanked slicers who don't look for their errant shots. I was just adding to it and saying that I'm sure that at some point in time, you sliced a shot and left it there and someone thanked you just the same.

I don't "classify all golfers based on handicap". It is quite easy to make the assumption that a golfer with a handicap of, or near, 30 - is not able to replicate a reliable swing and occasionally hooks/slices a shot.

Handicaps do generally provide a decent correlation to the golfer's typical score and consistency, as consistency and repeatable shots are what makes up your score and average score (ie Handicap).

i'm just now starting to transition away from e6s because i can't get them to stop on the green if it was a torrential downpour, but when i try a different ball (it started with e5's, but i wouldn't know until i went to go mark) i had much more success.  i lost a lot while getting around, but i didn't care as much because i got 50 for $25, but i also thank people who lose cheapo distance balls as well because i have a 5 gallon bucket of balls that i hit in my garage that were found (and some mojos).

i was thanking them because i tend to find nicer balls on the edge of the woods or hazard, as opposed to the beater balls that are bordering on the edge of might get attacked by a jungle cat deep in the woods.

i get to try a bunch of premium balls now because i'll walk along a treeline on a slow day and pick up lost balls.

but i think everyone should have learned a lesson from jimbo's thread that you can't just how a guy drives the ball by his handicap.

Actually, Jimbo's thread also proved that he is erratic and very inconsistent as well. It did prove his overall point of being able to occasionally drive the ball 300 yards, but it also proved exactly what he knows and admits to - lack of consistency with regard to ball flight/spin.

come on man, i'm just trying to have fun with you now but you're way too stuck on what was an inane comment. are you that offended by my handicap or the fact that i found some nice balls i want to try out?

are you constantly throwing prov1's into the rough in ham lake, mn and upset that someone is picking them up and using them?

and jimbo's thread was "i can drive 300 occasionally" and was responded too with mid cappers saying that it was impossible for someone with a high handicap to drive the ball that far. that's the lesson you should have taken away. there is more to a handicap than one part of your game and maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge someone without knowing anything about them or their game.

if a guy has a 15 handicap because he has to two putt from inside of two feet because of the yips, should you tell him he can't have nice irons because his handicap doesn't suggest that he's good enough to use them?

your attitude is exactly what makes this site negative to guys trying to get their feet wet and looking for information. i've seen a lot of guys on here get absolutely beat down for asking a genuine question because of people who are 5-15 handicappers (btw, a number that is in no way validated here) tell him that he's not good enough for x, y, or z or must take lessons before he even thinks about a, b, or c.

i've said it once and i'll say it again, the superiority complex from mid to low handicappers towards high handicappers is the kind of elitist crap that drives people away from the game. 4 to scratch guys usually aren't the offenders (if we keep this to the site and not the actual course), it's the guys that were probably high handicappers themselves not to long ago that seem to put themselves so high above other people. you don't have to look very far for threads that just reek of utter condescension by guys who are honestly only moderately better than the people they talk down to.

just remember that next time you have a smart ass comment to drop that has nothing to do with anything other than to try to comment on someone else's handicap, game, or choices pertaining to the game.

It's not a slice very often. Usually it's a straight push or a hook, but either way, you're welcome.  I never like to use a brand new ball on the first tee - bad karma for me. Same goes for my first dozen of any new ball. I'll go through it in a week then take a year to use the next dozen.

I'm just messing with you dude. I'm really sorry if you thought I was being an ass to you haha. If you're from NE Ohio, you probably have quite a few of my balls in your bag too.

ever since someone posted that lostgolfballs site i don't see myself buying new golf balls anytime soon. i was really impressed at the quality of their AAAA balls. i did buy a sleeve of a couple different brands because i didn't want to order 50 balls and have no idea how they hit. i recently fought a pull hook because of some setup issues, but no one is finding those balls. according to my wife (who is my spotter since i can't see balls beyond 200 yards unless i keep them way down) they are going straight and take a 90* turn to the left and take off. courses i've been to are not very friendly if you're not in the short stuff and left.

no problem. i'm a little grouchy about work, but my rant still stands. it just probably doesn't pertain to you, and i was kind of confused because i don't think i've seen you be a dick to someone so i didn't understand your attitude towards me. that's the beauty of the internet though, words can be taken a 100 different ways from what they mean.

my family is from the akron/canton area (the town of green and tallmadge), but i've never golfed up there. my grandfather was a big putt putt guy up there when he was younger.

speaking of my grandfather, that's where i get my ball finder adventures from. he used to make my uncle and dad go out into the woods and collect balls during the summer and even when i play with him it's rare that he won't stop off and peak in the woods. he collects golf balls and he has tons of those display cases full of balls of all kinds.

but i digress. no hard feelings. if i'm ever in northern ohio i'll hit you up and we'll play as long as you let me use my 31 handicap.

Hell, to the, NO! Like I would be seen on a course playing with a high handicap golfer? HA! I drive a 'Benz, smoke $20.00 stogies and wear Titleist hats. When you walk past me, I don't even see you and purposely bump shoulders with you to remind you that your inferiority should move out of my entitled complex when we're heading towards each other!

Haha, I completely understand your rant and agree with you. I won't mess with you like that again lol.

and you're good with the benz and the attitude, but no self respecting elitist golfer wears a hat! it's visor all the way. get yourself luke donald's wardrobe and you're money.

plus i think there's a PAT test to access the private course you should playing to keep scrubs like me off of it.

My buddy got me hooked on these cigars that I never heard of before... they're good for the course, but not so much after dinner though..

Blondie Acid? I believe that's the name. They're sweet, but not that weird... fake, sugary taste if you know what I mean. Check those out if you haven't already. They're not too bad cost wise either.. maybe $4/ea. or something? Typically lasts 30 mins too.

Crap, I'm doing it wrong then!!!

I have been playing Titleist balls all year, DT solo for most of it, then I started playing the NXT tour S a couple of months ago to see if I could get some check from wedge shots becuase the SoLo kinda rollssssss when I don't want it to (part of that is skill, part is the ball) but I recently picked up 3 dozen ProV1's form academy in the form of B grade recycled balls. I am absolutely in love with this ball right now, great at everything but I'm currently not playing with a driver at all because I was told to leave it in the bag for now while we work on irons and just tee off with my wood so I may not like it on the driver. I could absolutely blast SoLo's with the driver but they are a low compression ball, I may not be able to get the distance with the ProV's but they are working well with a wood and my scores have dropped (not from the ball, from the lessons) so I may end up sticking with them.

I do keep a random assortment of probably 3-4 dozen balls ranging from Nike to Taylormade and everything in between in the storage compartment under my back seat and if I think I'm going to the practice range afterwards to do some iron work or chipping I'll throw them in the bag (I ride so weight isn't an issue for me).

I just bought a dozen of the yellow Q-Stars as well. Good all around ball and the yellow makes it easier to find in the rough. Also have some Bridgestone e5's that I haven't tried out yet - heard good things about them, looking forward tomteying them. Was playing Titleist NXT Tours mainly for last couple years - bought used mint condition ones on line - but wanted to true something different.

In my Sun Mountain 14 Way Stand Bag:

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
