More details.

  1. Now open to all members.
  2. Members interested in playing free to write a review should become members of GolfZing http://www.golfzing.com/discount-tee-times and send a PM to Mike (mvmac) indicating that they'd like to play - tell Mike the name of the course, the date, and the time you'd like to play. Also tell us the email address you used to sign up at GolfZing so they can identify you and ensure that your round is completely complimentary.
  3. We'll coordinate and get back to you on the tee time.
  4. You'll be expected to write a review within a week of playing the course (ideally more quickly) similar to or longer than this one: http://thesandtrap.com/products/tilden-park-golf-course/reviews/4505 .

That's it! They'd like two reviews of each course (18 total). Golfers (you guys) can play any time Mon-Fri and after 11am on Saturday and Sunday (except Santa Clara, as noted above, is only Mon-Thurs).

If possible, please pair up in twosomes. You'll each write a review but it will be good to play together and meet up.

You can play and review more than one course, too.

I live an work in Oklahoma, but my wife and I are from the Bay Area. I've played Seascape and Tilden, and I'd like to give Monarch Bay a try since it's halfway between my family and my in-laws.  I'll probably be out in CA for the second half of September. If no one else has jumped in on this deal, I'd be happy to.

I have played Tildon, Sumittpointe, Franklin Canyon and Monarch Bay those are the course that are close to me.  My schedule varies so if you have another member that wants to play a certain day you could let me know.

I would like to start by thanking Jessie Hogue & Mike McLoughlin they set me up with Summitpointe in milpitas for 10 am today I got there checked in all was well the starter Victor was

great - now the good stuff  if you have never played here  well--- it is not a flat course now that's not bad just a little different for me  it will challenge you the fairway's are sloped on most of the

hole's my driver was working pretty good today i was using my new anser :)  on some of the hole's the ball would land on one side of the fairway and roll to the other side you would definitely

need to spend time here to get the local knowledge, there are number of water hazard's , the greens are fast and in great shape there were no problem's with slow play it went about 4hr's for me  would i go back? sure without a doubt i will be back  it was fun

Okay just got back from Stockton about an hour ago, anyways I want to thank Mike and Jessie as well The Reserve at Spanos was expecting me and there were no hang ups getting started. The course lays on the outskirts of Stockton CA adjacent to a newer housing development across the street however there are no homes bordering this course +1. This is a flat course and is very walkable, there are a couple long walks between greens and the next tee but not ridiculous. The course appears fairly new but has a decent amount of moderate size trees for the amount of wind that hits this area. Did I say wind? Well living fairly close to this area and knowing what the summer months bring I was pleasantly lucky enough to get to play this course on a calm day, usually out in the CA delta region we have heavy winds from about noontime everyday during the summer months but fall is another story all together it's like someone turns a switch off from the first of october till mid december.Anyways the course itself I found in good condition for the amount of play it probably gets during the weekends, I played with a local that said it does get crowded and the weekends and can yield some long rounds however today we pretty much had the course to ourselves and were able to finish in a little more than 3 hours. The greens rolled smooth and had a good pace to them not extremely quick but fast enough for good players but not too fast to embarrass weekend warriors. For being a flat course it had just enough variety to keep every hole as a unique experience, the only downside I could think of was the drainage collection areas alongside the greens were sometimes so darn soggy that I only tried using my 58* once to get out and that was obviously after I chunked it in this low laying wet tight lie area after that it was bump and run only, but even this is something hard to really blame the course, one has to realize Stockton is probably only a few feet above sea level so keeping a dry course is gonna be a bit of a challenge and these were the only spots that were like that the rest of the course drained beautifully.Okay grass driving range nice clubhouse inside and out, friendly staff, unfortunately no beverage cart girl but they did have a notice to let us know so no harm no foul there just not enough patrons I guess, nice newer EZ go golf carts, easy to find location, reasonable rates online (think my playing partner paid less that $25). I would recommend this course, the conditions are more than adequate, just try to avoid wind if possible the online deals are an excellent value The Reserve at Spanos is a course that all skill levels can enjoy.

So, I'm assuming you don't need any more reviews of The Reserve?  Considering it's where I shot my personal best, I would have loved to go back out there for free :)

I believe we still could use some more reviews.

Yes more reviews would be great, ideally we'd like all the courses to get reviewed and I think a "repeat" review is ok.

I'll be in the Bay Area from 11/9 - 11/26 on vacation with nothing to do but chill out with my family and play golf. Are these dates too late for you? If not, I'd love to do some reviews for you. I don;t have an offical USGA handicap, but I usually score in the low-80s. I also used to do reviews for a magazine, so I'd try to do as thorough and professional a job as possible.  I'd need to play as a single, as I don;t have any golfing buddies in the Bay Area. Let me know. Thanks - MJM

Probably Franklin Canyon, Santa Clara, and Monarch Bay. I haven't looked at all of the available ones, though. Maybe others.

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
