I play for a high school in small town. My parents have supported me in playing since I was young and my high school average so far is 36.8. My coach has me play #2 man to a senior that so far has averaged 41.4. My question is how do other teams arrange their roster? I would like to play #1 to play with the guys that I compete with on various tours in the off season. It seems pretty obvious to me but the coach keeps me at #2. Thanks, Freshman

How are your high school matches contended? Match play? Or do you just count the top 5 of 6 guys scores or something? If it's the latter, your position won't matter much, right?

My high school league had a rule that you had to be ordered in ascending stroke average, which would take care of things for you. I guess you don't have that rule.

Have you politely asked your coach why you're not #1 yet?

It is stroke play. I do. It mind playing second man but my normal competitors in the area are #1 on their teams as freshman. They are also freshman or sophomores and are good players. They do not play with kids that shoot in the 100s. My chances of playing with a 100 shooter have about 50/50 so far. I shot 82 with a kid that shot 140. I shot 67 with with a little better group and won a 23 team invitational. I think it is normal to have that kind of affect.

When I was in high school, we played half match play and half stroke play. The match play events were always ordered almost exactly by scoring average (allowing for small changes based on the opponent), but for stroke play the coach tended to change things up a bit. As a senior I had the second-best scoring average on the team (though I was really the third-best player), and I played anywhere from first to seventh (out of eight) in the order because I tended to be good at playing with the younger kids on our team. Our league had no firm rule, though you were supposed to order generally by skill/scoring (and I was really the only one who moved around much). I wouldn't worry about it much. When I was a junior, I had the fifth-best scoring average, but got bumped from states (top six players) due to seniority (two players came back from injury/suspension right before stats). That's not going to happen if you're first/second.

It's August of your Freshman year, right?  So you've been on the team for a month?

When I was playing HS golf, I was the number 1 guy my Sophomore year.  Then, in my junior year, we got a star Freshman who crushed everyone in our District.  Coach didn't put him in the #1 spot till second semester of his first year.  We can speculate any number of reasons why the coach might do that, and all of them make perfect sense.

Relax. You don't want to come across as a dick to the coach. Being #2 man as a Freshman is pretty strong. Be a team player. You'll be #1 man next year.

If position doesn't matter it's basically you just wanting to play with the better players and your friends. The senior that plays in the 1 spot has probably earned the right to be there by being on the team for 4 years. It's pretty common so I wouldn't be worked up about it and since it is the golf team you should be a good teammate.

When I was in high school it was strictly by ability/scoring.

I wouldn't take high school golf terribly seriously though, that is if you want to go somewhere with golf? In my senior year I had the low scoring average in my division. Noone looked at me (schools) Being in the golf business now, and seeing all the young talent, competitive golf outside of high school is where you're gonna be noticed, and where you're gonna get serious competition. Particularly the AJGA. You say you play various tours, stick with those. Again, if that is what you're looking for?

However, high school golf is a great way to get on some good local courses, without having to pay entry fees. And having fun with friends. Even if you're not playing with/against them in the same group.
