Do you all have different set ups for your driver as opposed to your irons or woods?

My instructor has been teaching me to keep my shoulder in more which has worked wonders. I even experiemented a little with my fairway woods and it worked great.

Could it work for irons?

The difference in the set up is these 3 things.

1st My left shoulder is closed a bit more.
2nd My right foot is out more kind of like Adam Scott on his drives. Would you want that to carry over to your iron play or only off the tee?
3rd. Is not really an example, but it does seem like I am getting more torque in my back and really striking well effortlessly.

My PGA instructor told me to do that on drives/off the tee and it works well. Is it weird to use it on any other swing?

Thanks for all the help.

Sincerely,

Patrick

Ball position:
Driver - Well forward, almost level with left foot. If I hit it off the deck, slightly forward.
3/5 Wood - Center. It gets the ball up in the air every time.
Irons - Slightly back. Further back if I'm unsure about my ability to hit it out of a bad lie.
Wedge - Well back. I'm trying to impart spin on it, not hit it super thin or fat.

Swing:
Driver - Well past parallel (imagine John Daly hitting driver) with a rather crappy finish that looks like Tommy Gainey's.
Irons - A vicious hack. Imagine Arnold Palmer swinging.
Wedge - Slow, accelerate, follow through considerably longer than backswing.

Both my feet are faced outwards, at about 11 and 2 o'clock, respectively. My stance is a bit wider than most other people I've seen. I always keep my shoulders back - leading with my left shoulder on the downswing causes an ugly push-fade that lands in the next fairway. As to feet, they are much closer to straight out with irons, rather than off to the side.

I have different set ups & swings for all my clubs.
Setup;
-Driver, In line with left foot if i want to get it high, inside left if i want to roll the ball a touch more. Tee height also varys.
-Woods (off the deck), middle a bit closer to my left foot.
-Irons, 3-iron about the same spot as my woods, 7-iron middle of my stance abit closer to my right foot, PW inside my right foot.
-Wedges, 56* about the same spot as my PW, 60* i dont often hit a full shot with it but if i do its about the same spot as PW & 56* just abit further back.

Swing
-Driver, Swing hard. Swing plane is the same as irons. Goes pretty much straight, i find that if i swing my driver slower that i tend to hook it.
-Irons, Slower than driver. Hit a pure shot 80% of the time. Slight Draw. I hit my irons further than most of my mates, although they out drive me 1/2 the time.
-Wedges, my swing with my wedges is abit more upright than my irons & driver.

Do you typically hit the ball right? Sounds like he set you up for an anti-slice swing, trying to get you to draw the ball.

I set up for a draw with my woods usually, and with my irons right up through 7 iron. For the shorter irons, I take more of a square stance, sometimes maybe a little open.

I don't personally think there is any wrong or right way, it's whatever works for you. I play with some very good golfers who love playing the ball right to left with all clubs. So even with a 9 iron or PW they will set up for a draw.

I have the exact same swing for all of my clubs, though the length of the backswing/follow through might change based on how far I want the ball to go. As per your set up, basically yea whatever you want to do, its just that maintaining one type of set up helps build consistency. Not to mention its easier to diagnose one problem and not 4 or 5

I prefer the ball position to always be just off of the left shoulder for tee shots and just in front of my neck for irons.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

I was taught at a young age to set up to the ball with my feet together and the club next to the ball to aline myself correctly, then when alined, step to the side with my left foot about two inches and then the right foot the rest of the way. so the ball would be off the inside of my left foot. And just take a wider step to the left with the irons.

Adding that to my preshot routine has dramatically helped my alignment

I can when I forget to drop my arms and come over the top I sure the heck can. I've been better about it lately starting my hip turn then just basically letting my arms fall and drag through the impact area.
