  1. 1. Do you learn from videos of pros?

    • Yes, it helps me understand the swing.

    • No, it would mess me up.

I was wondering if there was anyone else who watches the slow-mo videos of the swings of pros to try and understand things from a lesson or figure out flaws in your own swing? I know recently I watched a video of Rory Mcilroy and realized that my swing plane was so flat coming back because I had too much wrist in the takeaway. I saw that he turns it back, then his wrists are in position to bring the club right up and over his should on plane. It's helped me, so I assume I've gotten the right idea from it, but does anyone else learn from videos?

Absolutely you can learn from videos.  Can definitely spot similarities, maybe even 5 of them

Couple good threads to check out with a few pro swings

Didn't vote. Looking for "no, don't care". I watch golf on TV for entertainment. If I want to learn, I review my own lesson videos.

Watching the pros was how I learned to swing. Although back in those days they didn't have the slo-mo..

Maybe that's what I meant. I learned by watching good players, including pros on TV, but the slow motion bits do nothing for me.

I don't watch the slo-mo bits on TV, I use youtube for that. I mostly use TV golf to try and get a better idea of what works and what doesn't, as well as watching their course management.

Watching pros helps a ton.  I like to video my swing and put a side-by-side comparison to see what I am doing wrong.

That said, I eventually learned I am not going to swing like them.  They have been playing since they were kids, have been blessed with God given talent, excellent instruction, incredible mechanics and tempo, and simply practice and play much more than I do.

If you can mimmck the basics of their swing and make it work on the course you can be a good player.

I watch the type of shot they play, particularly on short game shots.  How was the lie?  What club did they select?  How much did they open the face?  Etc.

I have to agree with that. The slow motiong stuff is interesting to see, but it doesn't capture the dynamics of timing and tempo. You get used to analyzing real time swings. I have found that if you look at different areas you can notice different things about their swings. If you focus on the ball you can see plane and path. Focusing on their head gives good perception of the overall swing. Focusing on the hip area gives a good view of the leg action.

I find it beneficial in some ways, such as helping people to understand that they need to hit down at the ball and take their divot after the ball, not before.  IMO, a lot of new golfers think they need to hit up at the ball, even with their irons and seeing a super slow-mo video of a pro hitting down at the ball helps them to understand that.

Good point! I could watch Snedeker's chip on 17 a few times before it got old.
