So I went to a range a while back and tested the Long Tom by Cobra. I liked it. It didn't feel unweildy or too heavy or whatever so I decided to put an extension in a driver I've had for a while and go to the range to see what happens.

First impressions are the increase in swing weight. It felt heavy and kind of weird.

But after a few swings I'm right into it. some folks on here will know I've been experimenting with swings of late and part of that has been a change in grip. So now I use a split baseball grip.....very Moe Norman if you know what I mean.

An observation on the split B/B grip is how it seems very torque-y, you can muscle the ball with the leverage of the split hands, whereas with the traditional grips/ interlocking etc you can swing the club and build speed gradually. The thing I noticed was that trying to swing the longer heavier with a trad grip was impossible. I just couldn't get the club to get to the impact position at all it was just TOO heavy. But with the split grip I seemed to be able to get the extra weight and length to work for me, not against me.

The weight seems to make my takeaway and transition smoother. So my questions are, what difference in swing speed are usual for a club at 48 inches as opposed to 46 and who swings a heavy club are there advantages?

Spent some time with Moe. He only switched to the baseball grip after the Natural Golf people convinced him it was better, but by then he was older not playing as much and could have played with prosthetic hands. His normal grip was an overlapping grip but even then sometimes he interlocked. SO whats up your LPG swing not giving you yardage?

Those to top 2 pics are  a good description of my grip at the moment. I dont think I could ever go back to a conventional grip with a skinny grip.

As for the LPG swing, it's going great. Played 18 on my local 2 days ago and shot a 76. pretty pleased with that even though I never really threatened a birdie for the whole round.

I went out last night with my drivers and took some measurements on my golfshot gps.

My best was 273 meters with most around 255- 265. I'm definitely hitting the driver longer than I ever have.

But there's something going on here with the heavier swing weight and the way it seems to smooth out my swing. Any thoughts on that?

301 yards with an LPG swing? Can you please post your swing sometime. I really want to see this.

Huh? Am I missing something? I thought you said you switched to a split baseball grip, and those two pics show an interlocking grip?

Yes Billchao, your absolutely right. I didn't pay enough attention to the little pinky. My mistake.

I've noticed that my hands have been separating more and more. It certainly accentuates the pushing action of the swing.

Interesting. Was Moe's palm/lifeline grip a Natural Golf invention too?

    • I find that "hate" and "love" are far too strong for something like this. I've played soccer, and I like to win and dislike losing. Same for golf. Maaaaaybe I dislike losing a bit more than I like winning, but… nothing in the past ten years has really affected my mood more than about taking me from a 5 to a 5.5 or a 4.5. I "won" things at the TST outing this summer, and it just… was. Which sounds like I'm on mood depressors or something, and I'm just completely leveled out, but… I'm not. I just like to think I keep things in perspective.

    • In response to the first question, yes - I have reduced my average score in 9-hole league rounds by about 3 strokes.  As the attached plot chart shows, my high scores decreased and my low scores also deceased.  So I am scoring in an overall lower range. For the second question, I expect to make some improvement next year based on the results I am seeing in my recent practice rounds.  However, I have noticed that "plateaus" in scoring (and many stats) can persist for long time periods and can be permanent.  With advancing age and decreasing swing speed I may be mostly just working to maintain my current skill level.  I do expect a more consistent range of scoring as the result of frequent practice and overall playing experience.
