TheSandTrap Socal Golfers - Spring 2013 Outing - Discussion

423 posts in this topic

Yesterday, we played the first TST outing here in Socal at Mile Square golf course in Fountain Valley.  We had 10 guys, and it was a lot of fun.  Hopefully we can replicate this type of outing in the future, and many of us felt it was something we could do on a quarterly basis.

So in this thread, lets discuss geography, course(s), date and time we want to have the next outing at.  This can be up for open discussion and we can weigh the pros and cons about each.  The goal is to get more guys to join us.  So please direct users to this group discussion that are in the Socal area.  Or better yet, if you have friends or family in the Socal market who likes to play golf, let them know about TheSandTrap and have them join us on the forum.  Hopefully they will start using this forum as well.

A few things to consider based on discussions we had yesterday after our outing at Mile Square....

1.) Tristan lives in Palm Springs/Desert area and there are boat loads of courses we could play in the area.  Ideas were being kicked around about making a road trip that way and playing a round (or two) during the Spring, before it gets too hot in the desert.

2.) MvMac lives in San Diego - and we talked about playing there - possibly at Torrey Pines.  This is another solid option, my concern would be the cost of the round... As I know many of us are on golf 'budgets'.  But with the round being many weeks/months out - perhaps we could plan accordingly?  Torrey Pines is definitely on my 'bucket list'... And I want to play it.  So I'd definitely be interested playing Torrey.  But my thought is that maybe we should play in San Diego in the Summer (2nd quarter of 2013) as the weather will be a little nicer/warmer?

So I'll stop rambling now... What do you guys think?  Let's get some ideas flowing so that we can put together another fun outing.  Note, for those that attended yesterdays event... Also please comment on things you would like to see continued (things you enjoyed/liked) about the outing at Mile Square, and things you would like to see modified (disliked).  We want everyone to enjoy this so that this type of event can grow and become more exciting as time moves on.

On a side note, I'm headed to Terra Lago in a few to hit balls and I'll inquire about pricing for us for sometime down the road. I think it'd be a good course for all of us to play... right of the freeway, easy to get too and all of that. Real good layout as well.

Here's the site for those who may be interested in this:

I think were looking at the spring for this, right guys?

Yeah, my vote is for Palm Springs/Desert this Spring as it would be nice weather and not have to play in the gruesome heat.  Let us know what you find about the rates and we can bounce them off the guys here.

I believe that everyone had a good time and is interested in making it a recurring thing.  Quarterly sounds good to me.  I like the Palm Springs in the spring and San Diego in the summer idea.  One other option that we could kick around ...

If there are not enough members in the San Diego area or Palm Springs area to counteract the LA area folks who may not be able to make a long drive or road trip, we could consider something like Temecula as well.  I have never golfed there, but I believe they have quite a few nice courses.  Also - pretty proud of myself here too for guessing the "correct" midpoint - I just mapped it out and the drive from Newport Beach, San Diego, and Palm Springs, to Temecula are all within about 5 minutes of each other at around 1 hr 15 min.

Anyways, regardless, it'll be fun to plan another, hopefully continue to grow the tournament through the site, and also grow the site through the tournament if we can get more people to join.

[Beach: you should have told Andrew and Mike that they are required to join TST to collect their prizes!]

I'm done rambling too!

Ha!  Good point!! Let's make this a requirement for future tournaments/outings.  I'll send out notes to Andrew and Mike to ask them to join the site.

Temecula is a good area for golf.  The course I've played several times is Temecula Creek Inn which has 27 holes.  All decent.  The prices there on the weekend are $70 or $75ish.

Temecula does have some good courses and they seem to be pretty reasonable all year long so that could be a good option.

I'm just thowring it out there as a secondary option but I still think the Palm Springs plan should be our first consideration.

I agree.  Personally, I love Palm Springs for golf.

So I checked in with the guys at Terra Lago today and it'd be about $80-$100 per player right now depending on day/time and which course (the North course is more expensive, but honestly I think the South course is just as good). Those are the rates until April when they'll have a price drop.

Why don't we shoot for the beginning of April... the weather is still good, the days will be getting longer, and it'll be cheaper. I know it may be hard to get everybody out this direction considering it's 2+ hours for many of the members so I want to try to keep the price down as much as possible.

I will look at other courses as well, but from my experience, Terra Lago seems like the best blend of affordability and a nice desert layout.

Oak Valley in Beaumont may also be a great option... even now, their rates are $55 weekdays/$69 weekends. It's an awesome course and just a bit closer for most of the guys (just under an hour from the desert). Just throwing it out there... we have a lot of time to get this one figured out so let's come up with some different ideas and I can put this one together considering it looks like this one will be in my neck of the woods.

This sounds good to me.  According to Mapquest, its a 2 hour drive on the nose for me.  With the ample amount of planning time, I would look into making it a weekend with the wife and leave the kids with grandma and grandpa.  And if any others were considering staying overnight, either a late afternoon Saturday round (daylight savings time will have already started) or an early morning Sunday round seems like it would be ideal.

P.S.  Just noticed on their website that they held the Skins Game there for a few years (1999-2001).  Cool!

Guys, you're not thinking big enough.

Make Mike call ahead, tell the course you have 16 guys playing, and that you're coming as part of a Sand Trap outing and you'd like to work out a deal. You can all review the course, take and post pictures, link to the course's website, whatever.

Paying retail? C'mon. :) Think... ;)

Rooster in the hen house!!!

Joining just to post this. I am respectfully requesting that one of you guys use one of those cameras you use to film your swings to at least shoot some opening tee shots or something for us to watch. And maybe the green on the final hole?

That is all ... carry on.

    • Fair warning, this is a bit of a rant... I used to belong to a private club where I had regular group I played with, but due to various factors I gave up the membership this year, and I find myself playing as a single a lot more often on the local public courses. In the past week or two, I've been cut in front of multiple times, hit into a few times despite trying to leave my push cart somewhere visible, even the cart girl passed me by on a really hot day when I could've used a Gatorade OK, the last one was not the end of the world, but after everything else I was beginning to feel invisible. I get that as a single sometimes you have to take what you can get and just roll with the punches, but this in particular was ridiculous: It was late-afternoon and the starter told me to go tee off. I was about 20 steps from the first tee box when a kid (probably older teen) and his dad roll up from behind, drive past me up to the next set of tees and proceed to get ready to tee off.  They looked back and saw me, where I was now on the tee box behind them, at which point I was sure they'd apologize for not noticing me and either ask to join (which would've been fine) or wait.  Instead, they just played their tee shots and drove off. If that was the last time I saw them it would've been one thing, but I ended up waiting on them for nearly every shot through the first five holes.  Finally they skipped ahead to somewhere else on the course and I didn't get held up the rest of the time. Another time, I was already at the tee box (again, at the direction of the course), when a foursome rolled up ahead of me. This time, a lady in the group yelled back and said they were in a league and that I shouldn't be there. I explained that the course had told me to tee off.  She said, "Well, they shouldn't have" and they proceeded to play in front of me.  They were about 40 yards up so a polite discussion to sort things out wasn't going to happen. I waited for them all to play their second shots and got ready to tee off myself, except the lady turned her cart around and just waited in the middle of the fairway. I really wasn't in the mood to put up a fight so I went back in the pro shop and they sent me off the other side. It's not like I'm trying to play during prime time, these were both late-afternoon tee times.  I probably could've stuck up for myself more, but I didn't want to start a confrontation in either case at the risk of ruining my round.  Does anyone else run into this regularly? Not to get all "woe is me," but it starts to feel like the rest of the course wishes you weren't there, and in some cases people behave as though you aren't. Is this just the norm?
    • Ok, I get that, but why can any Joe Blow guy can still sell "New" product on eBay for less than MAP? I've seen it happen hundreds of thousands of time. Brick and Mortars resellers it's a lot more strict. @newtogolf I have a question for you... I'll use Mizuno as an example... Let's say I go to a Golf retailer and want a set of 2014 JPX- EZ irons... and they have them in their possession.... and have paid the wholesaler and Mizuno already has their money.... The retailer trying to get rid of stock, can't they sell them for whatever they can to break even... (we're not talking custom)... I know you can dump off demo clubs for whatever you can get for them. But I understand the whole eBay thing... Just list it as used... sell them at slightly more than wholesale...  As the OP said, longer product cycles are needed. The Trade- in value of certain clubs even clubs only 2 years old is going down the loo. Like I know a guy who dumped off a shitload of clubs at Dick's (like 90 or so) and only got a little over $500 and most were made within the last five years. Trade in a set of 1982 Ping Eye 2 irons you still get $80... (Still want a set of green dot eye2s +1" Stiff flex please)... With the fact that companies like Taylormade and Callaway were putting out product 4 times a year, it really effects the trade in values of their clubs. They want you to buy their newest product, but they are negatively effecting the ability of golfers to trade in one set of clubs and only have to pay maybe about half of full price for a new set. I will say, TaylorMade to my knowledge hasn't really released any new clubs since the M2 Tour irons.... I think with Mizuno, Titleist and Ping the product cycles are longer so they can control the prices a little longer and the value of gently used clubs doesn't depreciate quite so fast...
    • The PGA never does that in a major. 2005 and 2014 come to mind as two times where they could have done that and didn't. One time they got lucky, the other time they got burned. It's all about TV.
    • Especially since they preemptively suspended play before the rain actually started, it is weird (or, rather, an oversight) that they didn't start the round earlier in the day.
    • Nice round of golf after my lesson. Some stuff stuck well ? https://bnc.lt/yzOb/01H1A3wsrv
