I need some goals for 2013. I am a +1.0 currently and want to continue to get better. Some suggestions on some goals I should work to achieve are welcomed, thanks.

OP: have you birdied every hole on your home course?  If so, have you eagled every hole there?  These could be good ones if you are bored with your home course.  Other suggestions: go ___ holes in a row without a bogey, go ___ rounds in a row without going over par.

For me:

Goal 1 is to break 100, which should be very doable since I shot a 103 last year in my first full season of playing

Goal 2 is to get a handicap (index) below 30

The two things I need to do to achieve them is to cut down on big misses on long shots and get some actual practice on my short game off the course.  Way too many times where I've needed 2 chips to get on the green.  It's always tough for me to hit the range more than once a week, but I have a few lessons purchased I'm going to use soon, and hopefully the weather in NYC will become more conducive to golf soon (range is covered/heated, fortunately).

What kind of tournament schedule do you play?  Can you beef that up?  If you're not already, it may be time to step up to some bigger state/province or even national level tournaments/qualifying.

Along the same lines, I'd recommend playing as many different courses as possible.  Make sure that +1 travels well.  We've all known "scratch" golfers that can't break 80 outside of their home track......

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li
3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li
Hybrids: Titleist 910H 19* and 21* Diamana Kai'li
Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S
Ball: ProV1

I have birdies every hole at my course... Eagleing every hole could take like 40+ years and still not get it...
I have gone 18 holes without bogey (2times)
I have gone 3 rounds underpar in a row
maybe try to beat those ?!

Hit 100% of fairways... Note score Hit 100% of greens... Note score Shows yourself the relation to score when either of these two accomplishments are achieved. I know one of my lowest rounds in 2012 was when I went 100/83 FW/GIR%. What is your current GIR? Try to improve it by one additional GIR per rd. Track how many consecutive holes you can go without a 3putt. Try and break that record.

Outstanding!  There's your answer.  You've got the game.  I'd really set my goals around tournament results and small, quantifiable improvements in the few areas of your game that you feel aren't quite at the level of the rest.  One thing I always set as a goal is to not make any bad decisions on the course.  I struggle with that one a lot......all I need is for one bad decision to end up with a good result and it sets me back a long way!

I have some tourney goals already set, based on course rating and my handicap goals. I also need to devote more practice time to short game.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
