(If this is a duplicate thread my apologies)

Anybody on here attempting to qualify this year? I'd love to try it one day but I have a loooong way to go..

1.4 is the max so I'm sure like me the answer for most everyone will be "no" but surely someone here is going to try.

If you are, I am curious where your game was 2, 3, 5 years ago and how old you are now. Believe me I don't have visions of grandeur but I'm all for setting goals and working towards them. Reach for the stars right?

I need to shave about 8-9 strokes but I think about 3 of those are nothing but baggage right now (I am truly about a 6 but lack of time and higher taxes are eating into my golf allotment). Even still going from 6 to 1.4 is herculean but like I said there is no harm in trying and the practice I put into trying will at least make me a little better (I hope).

Qualifying is about a month away...

I'm caddying for my son in one. Ha ha!

I figure that's the closest I'll ever get to playing in one.

8.8 index here so obviously not.  And this is the lowest it's ever been, seeing as how I just start taking lessons and making a concerted effort to get better about 8 months ago.  I definitely have goals to one day play in tournaments like this, if I'm ever eligible, just to say I've tried, but for now, I'm a long ways off. :)

There are others that I am closer to though ... the California Am has a 4.4 cutoff, and I think the Cal Mid-Am is a 5.4.  Once I am (sorry: if I am ;)) good enough to qualify for those, I'll probably give them a shot just for fun. :)

I  always thought it was amusing to have minimum HDCP requirements for an Open golf tournament. If there's a minimum HDCP, call it an Invitational.

IF you want to try, check out this web site:

Question: How Can I Qualify to Play in the U.S. Open?
Answer: Any professional golfer, or any amateur with a USGA men's handicap index of 1.4 or lower, can attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open golf tournament .
( Although it should be noted that if you get in and your performance fails to meet a "good play" scoring threshhold set by the USGA, any future applications on your part might be rejected.)
-------------------------------------------
Note: You can stretch the truth on how good you are, but the Although sentence (above) shows how you can become shunned if you show up and shoot a 91.
Several years ago, one of the golf mags had a story about an official who sorted through excuses on why a "1.4 HDCP" shot bogie golf on qualifying day.

Certainly for the Open the answer is Maurice Flitcroft - who shot a 121 in first round of qualifying for the 1976 Open!

I remember here in Holland at the KLM Dutch Open the son off Bernhard Langer got an invite.

Surely not again he shot a 104 in the first round and 96 in second. I think he missed the cut.

Good to have goals.

Just curious, have you played (won?) in any local, county or state amateur tournaments?  Might be a good place to start.  They're generally a lot of fun too.

Hell, I'm just trying to get down to a 7 so I can enter qualifying for the Alberta Mens Open.

My handicap is nowhere near an 8 right now, more like a 15 so maybe not this year......

I have played in local tournaments yes. These were flighted net handicap tournaments mind you but it was a start. The first few I played terrible. Nervous, shanking the ball. Pretty funny now. Then I settled in and won several of the events. I was not in the top flight but rather 1 below so I was not winning low gross for sure. Certainly continued participation in things like this would be part of the plan. More than anything though its just a fun goal and makes me start thinking about the things I need to do that I don't do now like lots of short game practice for one.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
