My Orange Whip Blessing and Curse :)

I have been working with my Orange Whip for the past week or so and I have hit my driver today like never before.  I could not get the ball to slice if I wanted to, and my distance was great.  The curse, I could not hit a iron to save my life and I am serious when I say not one iron shot over 100 yards.  I have no idea what the heck is going on.

I'm take a guess and say that you're now hitting them fat. For some reason you've begun leaning a bit back on your downswing while grooving that Orange Whip, and that means the bottom of your arc is now behind where it used to be. So you're hitting the ground before the ball. When that happens, it doesn't matter what the loft of your club is, since it's the clod of dirt that's hitting the ball, not an angled piece of steel. They'll all go the same distance: short. When hitting driver, with the ball tee'd up farther forward in your stance, it may actually help you if the bottom of your arc is back a little. You're catching the ball on the upswing, adding a bit of loft. Why don't you see if you can vid yourself from the front to see where your irons are bottoming out? I may be way off base, not being a teacher or anything. But that was my first thought.

I encountered the same problems.   I love the Orange Whip and I'm hitting my fairway woods and driver like never before but am hitting way behind with all of my irons.  I eventually worked out the irons so I can hit them but I'm still hitting behind the ball.  I was just chalking it up to spending the winter hitting off of a mat.

I would encourage you to focus an inch ahead of the ball on your iron shots...that usually cures the whole fat shot thing if you have a decent swing. Or, if that's too dramatic...just focus on the front of the golf ball (the edge closest to your target).

If you're hitting behind the ball or pushing your irons, make sure you're not putting too much weight on your back leg in your swing so that you can't lean forward on it effectively, causing you to hit the ground too soon or lift up and top the ball.  When I learned to take a slow backswing with my head down and weight centered I found I could lean into my shot and it brought my club down and into my ball before the ground.

It may not be your problem but it really worked for me last night at the range when I was working on the very same thing.

    • Day 35 (5/7/21) - 9-hole league tonight. I can't seem to translate good drives on the range to good drives on the course and threw away a number of shots tonight. It didn't help that I had had a really busy day which included cutting the lawn. Like they say......golf is hard.
    • Well he won a pretty tough US OPEN so I think he’s got what it takes. BD pretty much a mess. Always having to resort to hero shots from tough spots off the fairway aren’t gonna win him too many tournaments. I would assume his SG off the tee were pretty poor for these rounds.
    • Looked like a tough day today. Jon Rahm didn't make the cut. I guess staring daggers at the camera didn't improve his putting any. And, what's with DeChambeau? All his length doesn't seem to be doing much good for him that I can see. He managed to sneak in under the cutline with a +2 but not a very good showing. Maybe if he dropped the Iron Byron look and added a bit more fluidity to his swing? Gary Woodland is doing OK so far but I expect to see him sag as the pressure builds. Hovland had a hard day, too, but only 5 shots back
