I've been Playing Golf for: 7 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 15 before I started lessons 3 weeks ago. Now, easily over 20

My typical ball flight is:  Fade/Slice

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is:  Shank

My swing has completely fallen apart since starting lessons 3 weeks ago.  I was a mid eighties shooter before starting lessons. Right now, I literally can't do anything but hit shank or ridiculous over the top slices. My instructor has me focusing on getting weight on in-step of back foot because I was swaying a ton with my legs before. I started back up with instruction because I've always been a clean picker and I wanted to hit the ball correctly, taking a divot, and getting the proper distance and trajectory.

Here's an 8 Iron shot. My down the line view won't load correctly.  I can see that I'm lifting up a ton and coming over the top, but I would love some advice.  Any and all tips are greatly appreciated!

And here's a couple of ugly driver swings. You can see on the second driver swing that I hit it on the ground and dead left. Please help!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I love your upper body form in particular during the back swing but I have no idea what is going on with your legs. Way too much going on down there I'm thinking. Knees bent all different ways, up, down, sideways. Tape some splints to that right leg, especially with the driver. (i don't claim to be a professional that's just the way I see it.)

Honestly to me it just looks like you're ridiculously uncomfortable throughout your swing. It all just looks unnatural. Relax, take a loose grip. Really for me when I swing I get most of my power in my wrists by leaving them loose and "flinging" the club like I want to chuck it in front of me. You look like you're swinging WAY too hard, also. Back off a little bit. Start with those, try to make solid contact the majority of the time and then fight the slice.

    • This. Whatever your longest iron is where you won't be in the trees a high percentage of the time. If that's shorter than 7i (as in, you'll have to hit a longer iron for your approach bringing trees back into play with high probability), I agree you're better off getting closer. But again play the percentages. If your 3w or 5w dispersion is solidly narrower than your driver, hit those. But some people hit driver straighter, so whatever gives you the highest probability of not being in the trees.
    • Essentially find the longest club you can hit straight and go with that off the tee.  You want the shortest shot into the green for your second.  If that is the hybrid or 7i or even PW, go with that.  You lose a lot more by being OB and having to re-tee
    • @TxGolfDude I’m curious as to how long this ‘repeatable swing’ has lasted. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we all know how cruel the Golf Gods can be. I too have had quite a golf swing journey. Unfortunately, when it comes to the golf swing I have zero natural talent. Nothing about it feels comfortable or natural. The grip? I’ve done them all and it still feels like I’m holding a knotted oak branch. The proper take away feels awkward and weak. Arms in a proper position, asinine and no feel of any power. I’ve had times where I think I’ve developed an acceptable swing with handsome ball striking for months only to fall apart. So, how long have you had this swing working for ya?
    • How come the marked shots on the picture add up to 366 yards and the label says 325? Are you playing it at 325? In any case, that hole is narrow with a capital NARROW. If those woods are lost ball territory, then I think you hit from the tee whatever club is accurate enough that you'll be able to hit the fairway "most" of the time. That could even be a wedge potentially, especially depending on how restrictive the trees back near the tee are. I might seriously consider playing this hole as 8 iron 6 iron or so. There's more room up by the green than the fairway, so save the longer club for the second shot.
