The New Psychology of Golf

Golf Balls with Swing Thoughts

I only browsed last week's PGA Tour Coverage, but noticed that some pros, probably at the suggestion of their golf shrink, put a simple "thought" on their golf ball.

The same pro had the writing of "AGGRESSIVE" on Saturday, and then another on Sunday.

Sounds like a good idea - for me, it would be "CONFIDENT" "SMOOTH" "NO HANDS" "LAG" "WEIGHT FORWARD" "SHORTEN SWING" "FLAT LEFT WRIST" "RELAX"

Hey, how big can a golf ball be?

I've got a lot to write.

Seriously, one simple thought...

Mine would say "FW&G;" for "fairways and greens". That was my father's mantra for me when I was playing junior tour events.

You don't know this, but I put "Fairways & Greens" on my last set of personalized golf balls --

didn't work for me...

But with those warm memories, it may work for you. It may place you in an altered golf state of better play ... one never knows about the mind...

Yeah it just became a way for him to say "keep an even keel and take it one shot at a time".

I've seen people do it but it doesn't work for me. Any unusual markings has me looking at the ball when I should be doing other things.

I would probably put either "relax and have fun" or "it's just a game" on my ball.  Those are usually the thoughts on my mind when things start to go bad.  If they would enter my mind sooner I might play a little better.

I'm the same way. I like a clean looking ball. I only put a small dot next to the Titleist logo to mark it. Found a ball once that had a dark sports team logo on it. It was huge. My buddy ended up playing it after putting one in the drink. It looked like the ball had been somehow cut or had a huge mud clump on it every time we came up to it. No thanks.

Mine would say "Go F Yourself" so that the person who steals my ball has a motivational swing thought of their own when they look down.

Seriously, mine would probably say "Calm" because I'm too damn hyper and risky.

Kind of ironic when someone digs the ball out of the rough

Mine would probably say something like "What happened to Bob?" If I named the previous ball Bob.

I'm not interested...

More and more I'm going non-verbal in my swing process. It started out with putts, and spread to shots off the fairway. If I just select the club, visualize the shot, line it up, and hit it, I do better than when I engage in happy-talk and other mental clutter.

Thinking and tinkering are OK on the practice range, or during a few practice holes, but seem to cause trouble during a real round.

Tee shots and partial wedges are an exception.

Focus, connect and follow through!

You make a great point.

When putting or driving, I turn the ball over to the blank side.

But I might write something simple as an experiment and keep one side blank so I can driver and putt with minimal distraction.

    • Yes, because you have lifted to like 120° without bending the left elbow. So when you turn and the left elbow bends… it bends in such a way that you then lower your left humerus and pull the club around you.

    • Day 3 (23 Jun 26) - Grandson put in to play this morning when he arrived at the house.  He wanted to play a full 18 from the "purple" tees (these are custom tees that play shorter than our gold but longer than the red) in a best (super) ball duet.  Was a great day working on course management - seeing him play well (for a 10yr old) - for example, hole 12 has a temp green about 100 yds from the tee box, he hits a solid 8i to 4' pin high and nails a birdie putt.  Could have never been prouder.  These are the moments grandfathers dream of - and hopefully the memories he will recall when his day comes to be Paw-paw for his grandson....may the game live on.
    • Posted a couple swings here. I think my attempt to blend the movement still results in a more “around” back swing?
