Thinking about the shots that I take when I golf.. I honestly think that I prefer taking iron shots (especially short irons) out of the rough. Anybody else feel this way?

Might be because when I throw a divot in the rough, there isn't as much resistance from the ground as there is on the fairway.

No... Not even remotely do I prefer rough over fairway. I understand some people may like that because once in awhile your ball is "up" in the rough almost as if it's on a tee making it easier to get the ball in air.

The problem is distance is more difficult to gauge, it's harder to make perfect contact, and spin is reduced. Not only that, rough here tends to be either watered and thick or just hardpan dirt.

Long irons are easier to hit in a thin rough, no1 likes to be in the thick stuff, you also might not be hitting down on the ball, and thats why you like less resitance.

I prefer the first cut, or perhaps light rough. I can hit anything out of there, but I'm prone to hitting a lot of shots really thin out of the short grass. But then again, the short stuff is better than the cabbage.

I used to like being in the rough because my ball would sit up pretty nicely but over the last two years I've developed a very compact and steep swing. I get a lot of spin from the fairway so I know I can attack a pin location... from the rough its the center of the green.

If the ball is sitting up in the rough, then I rather have it in the rough, but I rarely get that...so, no. If I'm hitting an approach shot, I must rather have it in the fairway so I can spin it.

I understand why you think this, I used to think that was true for me too, but now I've changed my swing a lot, it makes it a lot easier for me to hit it from the fairway than the rough.

The only time I really can honestly say I don't mind being in the rough is 100 yards to the green or lower. I don't know, but for some reason I think I can approach the hole better that way.

I dont know what kind of rough you play in, but it sounds like I need to get out to Mass. to golf. I will take a nice, tight fairway lie any day over rough, even first cut.

What if you're playing a long par 5 and wanna get it up there on the second shot. You could use a flyer sometimes to get it there.

A post like that is what makes someone like me question what you have posted for you handicap. If that were really your cap, you would be able to answer that remark yourself. Someone with your cap does not rely on a "flyer" to reach a par 5 in two. Post your real cap please!!!!!!!

Whoa! that's the dumbest thing I've heard in a long friggin' time...

1. There are guys on the PGA Tour who hit the ball shorter than 270 with the driver. 2. Every par 5 isn't a certain distance. I don't know what kind of course you play or from what tee, but the par 5's I play are usually 550-600. That can be tough to hit in 2. And I didn't say that I rely on a flyer to reach every par 5. I said sometimes.

Due to inexperience, and rather mellow rough at the courses I play at, I would agree that I find it easier to hit out of the rough, assuming it is in the first cut, or sitting up.

This might be because I learned to hit in my backyard, which is obiously no fairway...

For iron shots, fairway....for woods, i prefer the first cut of rough....the thick stuff is obviously no fun for any shot....also, some wedge shots in the rough(even thick) are easier...especially a short flop shot...i can't hit one from a tight lie.

Fairway every time, closely followed by first cut. Some courses have light rough, but if it's heavy, I want no part of it.....
