Improved contact, basically no follow through, arms straight and very low just past impact

Hi, I have been struggling with contact and getting consistant with swing. Had a lesson and the last 10 min was spent having a full swing, except at impact the focus was to simply punch the ball, almost like a follow through on a short chip shot..Very small follow through.. WOW!! Immediate results, all of a sudden striking the ball crisp, whilst maintaining balance, spine angle.. It was surreal!!

It felt like I was using minimal power, to get maximum results, I was only using a 7 and 9 iron, but was getting with 7 iron 130m (145 ft approx) with ease..A real eye opener..

It made me wonder if I can get all my shots from off tee to fairway and approach shots consistant using this "punch" follow through, then over time this is a technique/drill that is only going to help my game. I was wondering whether I can stick with it for good. Still get a around 200m off tee with the punch, and feel really positive about my game..

Love to read others thoughts on this  drill ??  it really works for me, and seems to be very easy on the body..another plus.

Cheers guys

I approve :-) Here's a version we did.  Yes can be a very efficient drill/feel for solid contact.  Watch guys like Charles Howell and Phil with his short irons, you'll see a lot of "punch" follow throughs.

Hey mvmac, thanks for the vid.. Basically would u recommend sticking with this for some time for a beginner ? When I get proficient at making consistant contact then look at more of a traditional follow through later on! Does this sound like a wise way of thinking ? If I can drive200m, 5 iron 150m, pitch wedge 100m and hit these and other in between clubs well them can this also be a long term way of playing? Sorry in advance for the questions...

If it works I would stick with it.  You can work on lengthening the followthrough but I would still try to keep the "arms stretching" feel.

    • Just add new stats of speed of play to the tour. Average time to hit a shot Number of shots per round the player took more than 40 seconds to play a shot Number of times under the clock Numbers of warnings per round for slow play Number of penalty strokes per round for slow play  Number of times the player took a WC break. Time spend on the WC  Number of times the player don't know basic rules and have to call for a rules official  Walking average speed Time spend reading yardage books Time spend arguing with the caddie about hitting an impossible shot.  Average time looking for a ball beyond 3 minutes.  Average time looking for balls on the hazards despite been in the middle of the fairway An a lot more that can give the committee enough information to award penalties after a round, tournament or even a season. Imagine a ruling were a player is awarded to play all April with 1 shot penalty each round because of slow play in March, should be a shit show I would love to see.
    • I agree. I like the Mission Impossible movies. None of them are life changing or movies that I would put in any kind of a top ten list. But they are pretty much always keep me entertained.
    • Might be good. Part 1 was only okay.
